Have you been able to locate any historical records on the family?
Birth, marriage or death records? Draft registrations? Census?
Checked immigration and naturalization records?

Not really. I don't know how to check naturalization records, is it possible that the name change could have taken place before coming to America? Or did Italians ever go to England just briefly before coming to America? I am assuming that they may have lied on Census records, but with what motive?

I'm going to take a look and see what can be found, one of our members who specialize in Italian names may have some further insight as to the correct spelling of the name.
Often immigrants went to England, and there as here in the states,
names were changed for a variety of reasons. So anything is possible.

Do you know the brothers names? Or their wives?

Here is Arnett's birth record:

Kentucky Birth Index, 1911-1999
Name: Arnett Mann
Date of Birth: 10 Jul 1921
County: Morgan
Mother's Name: Bess Arnett
Volume Number: 128
Certificate Number: 63807
Volume Year: 1943

And death record:

Kentucky Death Index, 1911-2000
Name: Arnett A Mann
Death Date: 17 Mar 1969
Death Place: Magfn
Age: 047

I would send for these records and see what is listed for father's information.

From the census all births occured in Kentucky even that of Solomon's parents.

Census information can have numerous mistakes, while very useful for a variety of reasons, it is used as a jumping board to locate other records.
Although in some cases, is used as a primary record.
I have an excellent article detailing census use if I can find it.... :P
