Looking for info on Angela Corrado

Postby fdebiase » 06 Mar 2009, 03:33

I am rather new to genealogy but have quickly become addicted! My great-grandmother, Angela Corrado, was born in 1867 and came from Italy. I have found a record of her arriving at Ellis Island with 4 daughters (my great-aunts) in 1905. But, no sign of my great grandfather, Francesco DeBiase, or my grandfather, Carl DeBiase, or my great uncle, Anthony DiBiase. I am searching for any information on Angela or my great-grandfather, Francesco. I believe they lived in Chicago based on the Ellis Island records, but I cannot find any birth or death certificates, or anything else! Can anyone help??

Hi Fdebiase,

Have you noticed that on the 1905 arrival manifest for Angela her two first daughters were U.S. born?
Angela declared she has been in the U.S. before, from 1886 to 1892 and that De Biase Maria (age 14) and Concetta (age 12) were born in the U.S.

Don't know if you have subscription to the site Ancestry.com, in case you don't have here is the 1910 census for the family:

in the database : Illinois, Cook County Marriages, 1871-1920 you'll be able to find your grandfahter Carl's marriage license...

This is Francesco and his son Carmine (Carl) 1902 arrival manifest
They were coming from San Vincenzo La Costa (Cosenza Province - Calabria region), the same town that Angela stated in her 1905 arrival...

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Francesco Di Biase
Name: Francesco Di Biase
Arrival Date: 25 Feb 1902
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Age: 46
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Napoli
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Ship Name: Citta di Milano

Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Line: 26
Microfilm Serial: 15t715
Microfilm Roll: T715_254

It sems they were going to join a cousin (maybe Francesco Mele? in Christy street, NY?) but Francesco declared he was in the U.S. before from 1887 to 1898?

You can also check this italian site for free:

http://88.59.143.158/ascs_web/index.faces

It's the Cosenza State Archives site, you'll be able to find records for Francesco....

Good luck!

I am so grateful to all of you for the information! This is definitely my family, as all the names match (or at least we have some Italian/English translations!). I haven't yet joined ancestry.com, but it seems that they own everything! Do I need to join - is it worth it?

I was so leary of joining Ancestry, kinda ticked me off to have to pay for access to records, I'm a firm believer in free transcriptions!!
But after joining, I soon realized the benefits and have continued my subscription for four years.......

Footnote is very good as well, but save your money on Genealogy.com...
they have a lousy search engine!!

I prefer HeritageQuest over Ancestry for census info, even though they have yet to fully index the 1930 census. Heritage has an awesome search feature,
anyone can find anybody using their search features!!

Hello Everyone!

I have been busy on the websites! I looked up and it was 4 hours later! Great news is that I found the marriage information of my great grandparents! They were married in San Vincenzo la Costa on February 1, 1885. Now, I am looking for birth records for my 2 great aunts - Rosina (Rosa) DeBiase and Letizia (Lena) DeBiase. They were the only 2 children born in Italy approx. 1900-1901. Does anyone have ideas on Italian websites? The interesting thing is that no one in my family knows about Letizia, and my grandfather (Carl aka Carmine) had a shotgun wedding with my grandmother - my aunt was born 6 months later...

Sex M
Literacy U
Ship GIAVA

This is the only Francesco whose birthdate is close to that stated.

Thanks again! Today I found some great news at the local library. They actually have a website which gives anyone with an Oak Park, Illinois library card FREE access to Heritage Quest Online, Ancestry.com Library edition, and several sites with old newspaper articles from Chicago. I don't know if this is common, but the ancestry.com website (although only for US and UK) is great for free!! Everyone, check your local libraries!

Not only does the public libraries have free access to paid databases,
but genealogy societies often provide them as well.

Francesca,
My friend has extractions of some civil records from San Vincenzo La Costa on her website here She does have birth records from the early 1900's up.
Since I am very familiar with this surname from the town next door Montalto Uffugo and I know a lot of people from San Vincenzo married and had children and died in Montalto Uffugo, you may want to check my website here for records too. You can type in the surname DiBiase or DeBiase on the main page and will be given links to all records on the site with that surname. Also, make sure you check both spellings DiBiase and DeBiase. The name changed over the years and sometimes the stato officials got it wrong. As you get further back check out the Cosenza Province Archive here. Good luck.

Hi Cathy,

I had looked at your friend's web site before - it was very helpful! I found the marriage certificate of my great-grandparents there! On your website, I got very lucky! As my great grandfather was born in 1856, you do have the birth records for that year. I printed out the birth certificate (Francesco DeBiase - born March 8, 1856) and translated part of it with an internet translation site. I will have to try for more as some of the handwriting is very hard to read! I believe that my great grandmother Angela Corrado was born in San Vincenzo, but she was born prior to the records of your friend. The records begin in 1866 and she would have been born between 1860-1865. I also found a death certificate for a Giuseppe DiBiase (died at 4 years old in 1880), father was Francesco DiBiase but mother was Carolina Saullo. I wonder if my great grandfather was married more than once?? The search continues....

Thanks so much for all the help!
Francesca
