Info on the name Sarro

Post by Paolucco »

Hi, I am looking for some info on the surname Sarro. My great grandfather and grandmother came to the US around the time of 1915-1920. There names were Alfredo and Fortuna. My great grandmothers maiden name was Moresco. I think my great grandfather was originally from Calabria and my great grandmother was from Naples. My great grandfather also had a brother who had came to the US in the early 1900's but returned to Italy soon after ,allI know is that his first initial is T. Any info would be great , I saw a preview on the Ancestry site where it shows something about them from the 1920 census report but I haven't subscibed to them just yet.
Thanks

Paolucco, welcome to IG

Here's the image of Alfredo's WWII Draft Reg Card. Shows his birthplace as the town of Cerzeto in Cosenza Province, Calabria.

Thanks a lot Biff , I actually just went onto the website for the town of Cerzeto in Cosenza and the last name Sarro is the 3rd most popular name there.
Would you be able to find anything on the maiden name of my great grandmother which is Fortuna Moresco. I had thought that she came from Naples, any idea of where that name originates.

Thanks a lot Biff , I really appreciate it. Yes the name Maresca is the 2nd most popular surname in Piano Di Sorrento.
Is there any way of going about how to find relatives still in Italy?

Here's a link to the Italian white pages.
http://www.paginebianche.it/index.html

Type in the surname in the cognome section
The town name in the dove section and
then hit the red Cerca button.

You'll get a list of names/addresses/phone numbers for people living in the village. There are 142 Maresca listings in Piano di Sorrento, and 11 for Sarros in Cerzeto.

Here's a sample relative letter from the following link which you can adapt for your purposes.

Non saprei dire se sono imparentato con qualcuno che porta il cognome Zerga residente a Cicagna.

I am writing to those Zergas with the same given name as my father or grandfather or great grandfather.

I'm going to have to try to do that Biff. I was talking to my father today and he had found my great grandfathers death certificate , which is Alfredo , the one you got me a lot of info on. Alfredo's fathers's name was Francesco Sarro and the mothers name he couldn't make out, it was something like Maria... Garria...... he couldn't read the rest. All I know is they had at least two sons , Alfredo and Giuseppe. Is there any way of looking up the marriage records online for weddings in Italy in the 1800's. I know its a long shot. I would assume that they were married somewhere in the Cosenza area of Calabria , possibly in the town of Cerzeto.
Thanks

There is the only archives for the province of Cosenza that has records from 1800-1900 not all the records have been put up yet sometimes is better to just put the last name with no town and see what all comes back. you do have to register but its free, and you can change the language to english.
