help on researching correct spelling/documentation

Postby mysterymkm » 21 Mar 2009, 15:39

I am new to this site so I'm not sure how it works or what I'm supposed to do. I'm trying to find the correct spelling of my great grandparents last name. It was changed back around the 1920s to Minute ,but I believe it was Minnitti before. I'm trying to find specific documentation on this. A marriage license or birth certificates? Does anyone know how I would go about this? I asked my grandfather years ago and he wasn't exactly sure on the spelling, but he thought it was Minnitti so that is what he put on the gravestone too. I went to Ellis Island and I saw a Joseph Minniti on the Wall (and Joseph was his father's name) but it was only one "T" in the last name. I was really excited that I may have had relatives pass through Ellis Island but now I'm not sure anymore because of the spelling. Both his parents were from Reggio Calabria. I guess his mother's name was Mary Mizerruca before she was married. My grandfather just passed away a few months ago so I'm lost at finding anymore information and this is really important to me now more than ever for some reason. I dont want to go to these sites that make you pay for information because how do I know once I pay that the results I get will be for my exact relatives? Please help!! thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum, :D

Ellis Island has only a very few Minnitti and Minitti. The most common spelling is Minitti. Here is a site that will show you how the name is distributed in Italy.

The only viable spelling is Minniti and appears to be found in Calabria in substantial numbers indicating that the spelling is probably accurate. =Peter=

If you can provide more details members can better direct your search.
Do you have dates of birth, marriage and death for the ancestors your searching? Do you have their parents name? Did they have siblings that you know of? What were the names of the children and year of their birth?
In what US locations did they live?
Most members here have access to several paid databases and can provide records for you if found!

In the meantime, maybe this will peak your interest, an outstanding undertaking by a great group of people!!

Reggio Calabria

Dear Mysterymkm There appears to be a possible connection with a GIUSEPPE MINNITI, born 1878 arriving aty NYC in 1904 at age 26. The ships manfiest was not immediately available for additonal informationto further identify the person who comes from Reggio Calabria as per the ellisisland.org website. =Peter=

Hello!
Sometimes if you start with records you can confirm, you then can search backwards for your g-grandparent’s immigration or a record with the original spelling of their surname.
For example, do you think this record could belong to your family?
If so, you could check Ellis Island for a Gius (or spelled wrong Guis) Min born abt 1890 +/-5 yrs immig abt 1905 +/-5yrs (as Peter suggested)
http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
We can help you search if you’d like us to.
Thanks!
Valarie
