Name pronunciation help...

Postby mpedro62 » 22 Mar 2009, 13:30

I have just begun researching my genealogy, and have found that my great-grandather's marriage records listed his last name as 'Pietraroia'.

Can someone please help me pronounce 'Pietraroia'?

Thanks

Check out this site. I understand the pronunciations are quite accurate. You can even type entire phrases; add punctuation (commas, exclamation points, etc) and see how the pronunciation changes accordingly.

'Pietraroia'.

PEE - ET - RAH - ROY - AAH

Hope this helps - it's a lovely name and is also the name of a town in Benevento.!

It is a nice name...too bad it didn't stick when my ancestors came to the US. I've already found 4 different anglicanized versions - Peter, Petro, Peters and Pedro - which has made it difficult to track everyone down.

Thanks for the quick replies, and for the link! Very helpful stuff.

Neat site that.... thank you. But I couldn't make her slow down... Her speed was fine for me, but might be daunting for people learning some of the longer words. But hey - at least they can hear Italian words, that they choose, spoken and as you say, quite well too!

elba,

I also like that you can choose different "actors" to say your words or phrases. If you try several you will see that they are not simply different voices, but also different (regional?) accents.
