Barbale in Gasperina

Postby jbarbale » 27 Mar 2009, 17:10

Hello,

I have been doing a lot of work on my family tree recently and have had many exciting discoveries. One branch that I have difficulty with is the Italian one. My Grandfathers name was Barbale and his fathers name was Nicola. From what I have located (WWII registration card), I'm pretty sure he was originally from Gasperina, Italy and then came to the US and settled in Massachusetts. Nicola's wifes name was Rose Fabricatore (not sure of the spelling). Rose passed away at a young age and my grandfather and his siblings were split up amongst family members which adds to the difficulty since there weren't strong family ties even among all of the siblings. Any help or direction anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,

don't know if this document should be of any help, in the doubt I'll post for you (and just in case you don't have it)

Hi Laura,

Thank you for the fast reply.

I have to say I'm surprised at the document you posted. It makes a lot of sense that this may be my Great-grandfather. He was born in 1894 and his eldest sons name was Gregory which could be after his father Gregorio mentioned here.

I do have an ancestry.com membership and reviewed a few Nicola Barbale's on documents like this but they weren't who I was looking for. I wouldn't have thought to look under Barbato but the handwritten documents do leave a bit to interpretation. I am curious about what made you chose this document versus the others, especially since it makes a lot of sense that it may be him. Lastly, do you know how I could research further into the Italian records (his father Gregorio and possibly mother)?

Thank you again,
Joe

Hi Joe...

first I noticed that Barbale is a rare lastname here in Italy, I don't know if you checked this helpful site:

http://www.gens.labo.net/

digit the lastname in "cognome" and you'll see that Barbale is present only in 5 towns in Italy.... So I searched Ancestry.com with possible mispelling and I found out this one....
I found also the 1930 census for Nicola and wife Rose and saw that first son was named Gregory, so I presumed that the arrival manifest possible is the correct one, age matches, destination matches, place of birth matches  ....

Found also the Draft registration Card for the first World War:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

State: Massachusetts
Birthplace: Italy

Just for references here is 1930 census:

Cathrine Barbale 11
Gregory Barbale 10
Charles Barbale 9
Vincent Barbale 8
John Barbale 5
Alfred Barbale 4
Rose Barbale 2 6/12

Have you noticed that in the second page of the census manifest just a few lines under the last Barbales child there are listed Rose's parents??
Rose was born in New York State but her parents were italian....

here is 1920 census for Rose (just in case you didn't see it  )

1920 United States Federal Census

Rose's parents stated they did emigrate in 1899... And Charles italian firstname was Carmine. You'll find on ancestry also the index for his naturalization...

As you know Nicola's birth date and father's name you can write to the Comune of Gasperina asking for an "Estratto per copia integrale dell'atto di nascita di Barbale Nicola, nato il 29 luglio 1894, figlio di Barbale Gregorio"

Herer you can find an interactive form letter to compose the request in italian:
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html

here you can find the address of the Comune of Gasperina:

http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/calabr ... erina.html

Or, if you are familiar with the Family History center you can choose to search by yourself the document between the birth acts of the Comune of Gasperina because the Mormons microfilmed the civil registration of Gasperina:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... o+civile++

here is the link to find your nearest Center:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp

I hope all this helps you!

Laura,

Thank you so much for your help. I am extremely grateful.

The links and information you provided are excellent resources. Hopefully my research will be made a little easier due to the fact that it is a rare last name.

I will now continue my quest and follow your advice about visiting the Family History center and writing to the Comune of Gasperina.

Thank you again,
Joe
