Bettola

Postby barbg » 07 Apr 2009, 22:33

I'm just starting to try and research birth information on my great grandfather, Pio Della Giarina. I know he was from Bettola, Piacenza and was born around 1872. He came to the US in 1893, according to the Ellis Island records. He married Angelina Castignoli in the US about 1897. (He and my great grandmother raised my mother). That's about all I know.

Can anyone help me with who and how to write to Bettola to inquire about birth records from the US and how much it might cost? Is there a better way to find out this information?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you so much for responding. My mother thinks his birthday was around April 10, 1872 but she's not sure (my mother is 82 and things get cloudy sometimes). She also thinks he may have been adopted so I don't know how to even begin. He and my great grandmother raised my mother but he never spoke about his home.

My great grandmother I know a tiny bit more about. She was Angelina Castignoli and was a few years older than my great grandfather. She came here with her sisters in 1895 according to Ellis Island records. Her father's name was Luigi and her mother's last name was Alderici.

Thank you for the links. Do you know if they respond to inquiries?

Hello Barbara!
Most comunes will respond to your request.
How long it will take usually depends upon how much help they have and what their workload is like.
Your grandfather's birth was recorded.
I would use the estimated date for your inquiry.

If you want to wait until you have his parent's names before you send your request -

In case you don’t have their marriage record, it usually has parents’ names:

Ordering NYC Vital Records
New York City Archives

Giarina Pio Delia Feb 28 1897 Manhattan 3964
Castignoli Angelina Feb 28 1897 Manhattan 3964

record from IGG (Italian Genealogical Group):

Another option

Are you familiar with Family History Centers (LDS)?
You can order and view your family's records on microfilm at your nearest center for abt $6 mo:

Topic: Italy, Piacenza, Bettola - Civil registration

Titles: Registri dello stato civile, 1806-1929
Bettola (Piacenza). Ufficio dello stato civile

LDS library catalog:

---

Let us know if you need help with how to proceed with microfilm.
OK?

I apologize for the delay in responding. Thank you so much for the information. I have sent a letter to Bettola but my sense is that his birth name was not Della Giarina but his named when he was adopted so maybe I need to pursue LDS files. Thank you so much. What a wonderful gift to those you help like me.Barbara

I've heard of it but I've been afraid they'd try to talk to me about the Mormon religion so I haven't pursued it. I think since my great grandfather was adopted that I won't find a record. He may have been illegitimate and his surname name probably was not the same as his birth record name.
Thanks again for your help.
Barbara
