Cerbone Family from Afragola

Postby LCerbone » 14 Apr 2009, 00:10

Hello,

I have been researching my family from Italy. My great-grandfather was named Carlo Cerbone. He was born in 1865 in, I believe, Afragola. His wife was Marie Capasso. Together, they immigrated to America in 1902. I have been trying to locate their parents and possibly their siblings. Also, they came to America from South America, but I have not been able to locate a ship. If anyone knows any thing about this family, please let me know.

Many thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

from http://www.ellisisland.org/
this is Maria Capasso and her child Giovanna (Jennie) and Vittorio (Charles) arrival on july 1903.
She was joining her husband Carlo Carbone living in Orange, 286 Scotland Street, she stated Afragola as her last residence in Italy...

Thank you so much for your great responses. They are so helpful. I had found some of this information too, but it has left me with some questions. Would they put the wife's maiden name on the Ellis Island passenger list if she were married? Also, how do I know for sure that Giovanna is Jennie and Vittorio is Charles? Do these Italian names translate to Jennie and Charles usually? Do you think they misspelled Carlo's surname? His age on arrival seems a little young. I'm hoping this is accurate, but there are a few inconsistencies. Is this par for the course?

Many thanks,
Lisa

Lisa,

It was and is the custom in Italy for women to use their maiden name documents so your great grandmother would have travelled under her maiden name.

Here's a draft card for a Charles Cerbone. If this is Vittorio, it verifies the age on the ship manifest.
WWI Draft Card
Name: Charles Cerbone
County: Essex
State: New Jersey
Address/Town: 14 Joyce, West Orange
Birthplace: Naples, Italy
Birth Date: 28 Mar 1895

Dear Biff just a small refinement..it is legal and required for women to retain their identity. its not a custom as such. =Peter=

General guideline for name variations:

Italian Names = English Equivalent
