Napolitano, sgambati thread.....I was wondering if a passport from italy would have been needed to enter the US in the early 1900's

If so, Can I get a copy of application?

In 1869 the Italian government began requiring people to obtain pasports to move within Italy itself. However, the USA and many other countries did not require passports, so many italians left Italy without an official passport.

The Italian government used passports to make sure young italian men did not emigrate to avoid the military draft. Police were responsible for passports.sorts in Italy are still issued to day by the QUESTURA (head of the Internal Police) in each province. The archives where these passport records are kept are not open to the public. The Uffico Anagrafe in each comune, however, keeps records of residency changes and emigration along with dates and destinations. =Peter=

I agree Peter. My great grandparents moved to the US in 1906 and 1909. My great grandfather did not have a passport but my great grandmother did. When she returned to Italy from the US however in 1913, she left her Italian passport (dated 1909) in Colorado and yet she was still allowed to travel home so I don't think they enforced the use of Passports in the US back then.

I am still trying to find out the date that passports were required for entry into the USA by aliens. =Peter=

per all of my posts, napolitano, sgambati, I think I figured out the name I am searching for a passport may be wrong, per a census my great grandfathers name was Saverio Napolitano, but He used the name Samuel Napolitano, born 1869 I have 3 threads and thanks to this website and this team I have more than I though possible, I would absolutly be thrilled to see a picture......searching forever I think..
