Limatola and family

Postby dunnbv » 09 May 2009, 23:02

greetings....my grandfather, Biagio Vinciguerra came to America from Limatola, Italy in 1901 on the ship Sicilia with his cousin Francesco Cervera his cousin Cervero in Amsterdam, NY.Biagio's father was Vincenzo who came over in 1898. We went to Limatola and could not find any Vinciguerras. Any ideas on how we could find some of our relatives. My father always told me that his family was still in Italy but we couldn't find them. Any thoughts?? Of course we could not speak Italian so we were at a disadvantage. Thanks for any help.

The problem is there are no Vinciguerra's in Limatola at this point. And I have no idea where they may have moved to.

Hi Bernie,

My Vinciguerras come from Castelvetere in Val Fortore in Benevento Province. Limatola is also in Benevento. Most of my family left the small town in search of work in bigger cities like Naples. Some went as far as Torino. Here is a site that shows the dispersion of Vinciguerra in Campania

http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

Here is a site that tells you more about Limatola.

http://en.comuni-italiani.it/062/038/index.html

And in addition, the Family History Center has the microfilm records for Limatola from 1809 to 1860. This may be too early for Biagio, but it may have Vincenzo's birth record. If you can find that, you are on your way to tracing the family.

I am assuming that you have ship's manifests and American census records. (If you don't, let us know and we canl help.)

Good luck, and if you need further assistance, let me know.

Greetings,

When you order in the micro films from www.familysearch.org, use this site to learn how to read them. I would look starting from your ancestor and forward to the 1900's and see who his cousins were. Then go to the white pages of look up people with that same name.

I am a descendant of Francesco Cervero/Cervera. He married in Philadelphia and later moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin. He was a shoemaker. Some of that line stayed on the East Coast.
