Tesso?

Postby TessoBorzaga » 26 May 2009, 15:20

I am having a very difficult time trying to find my great grandfather's information. I found his household listed on the 1930 Census in West Virginia, and it states his wife's name and those of his children. It also says he was born in Italy, and that he immigrated in 1912, but was not naturalized. Here is his death certificate info (maybe someone can help point me in the right direction as to where to look):

Name: Charles Carlo Tesso
Death date: 01 Jan 1965
Death place: Bluefield, Mercer, West Virginia
Gender: Male
Age at death: 77 years 10 months 23 days
Birth date: 08 Feb 1887
Birth place: Casino, Italy
Marital status: Married
Spouse name:
Father name: Dominic Tesso
Father birth place:
Mother name: Josephine
Mother birth place:
Occupation: Clerk N. W. Rr
Street address:
Residence: Bluefield, Mercer, West Virginia
Cemetery name: Walnut Grove
Burial place:
Burial date: 03 Jan 1965
Film number: 800733
Digital GS number: 4227406
Image number: 224
Reference number: v 11 T p 7
Source: County Records
Collection: West Virginia Deaths 1853-1970

My grandmother had always told me his middle name was Carless, but that's not how it's listed. I know he was born in Cassino, Italy, the province was Frosinone, and the region was Lazio - but I have been unable to turn up ANY Tesso in my searches. My only thought is that he must have changed his last name, though I have no idea what it might have been originally.

Any help anyone could offer would be so appreciated!

Hi all! :D

From the military enlistment for the First World War Val posted it seems he was born in Pignataro (Pignataro Interamna - Frosinone Province - Lazio region)...

Here is an interesting arrival manifest for Carlo Tisco (from Pignataro to West Virginia):

I think all of these are him, so now I am confused! The draft reg. card is definitely his, because from the 1930 census I know he was employed by the N & W R. His birthday is correct on the draft card as well, but he writes his name as Carlo Tiseo (or Tisco, can't tell which). The immigration record is him as well, because in 1905 he would have been 18, and he did come from Pignataro as far as I can tell. I can't read the name or address of his relative though, and that record says "Tisco." The 1920 census is him as well, though it says Carla, because his children are correct - Rosa is his wife, Rosa L is Rosa Lie, Annie N H was Annie Nellie Hazel, William S is William Scott, and Carlo is Carl. Their last names, though, including his wife, are all listed as Tesso in the SSDI. My grandmother was born 8 years later, and her maiden name was listed as Tesso. Thanks for all of your help! I am so confused, lol! :)

Joining uncle Vincenzo Di Torio in Giatto (Mercer County) West Virginia. Carlo is travelling with a Francesco Di Torio on line 20.

If he is from Pignataro then the surname of his Uncle is probably Di Iorio. (not Torio)
Tiseo is found in Pignataro but not Tisco.

I took all the information everyone has posted here, and I still can't find anything! So either my "skillz" are lacking, or I am not looking in the right places. His parents were supposedly named Dominic & Josephine, so I have been looking for Dominic and Domenico, but nothing is turning up. I have no clue what the maiden name was for Josephine, so I don't even know where to look for that. They were both born in Italy as well, according to the family Bible (he just wrote that both his parents were born in Italy - I found the names online).

Hi Tesso-Borzaga,

I too noticed that the lastname Tisco doesn't exist in Italy, so I would advice you to follow Italysearcher's suggestion (she lives in those areas).
The correct last name could have been Tiseo, you can easily find on this site:
http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

digit Tiseo in Lazio region and you'll find this surname in Pignataro Interamna for first....

Laura, is there a way to look at the names, or does that site just tell you how many names they have listed for a particular area? I am thinking Tiseo really was his last name, because it's the one he signed himself on the WW1 Draft Registration form.

Thanks again to everyone for helping me!

Why not just request the birth record from Pignataro and save yourself all this agonizing? With luck, his marriage is noted on his birth record.

I am very new to all of this, and at the risk of sounding stupid, I'll still ask - how exactly do I do that? And what is the cost?

...his death cert. here says he was born in Cassino, though the ship says Pignataro. I suppose I should request it from both places, then?
