Looking for DiDonato and Mascio from Lazio or Abruzzo

Postby kDiDonato » 27 May 2009, 18:31

Hi, I'm new to the forum and am looking for information about my great grandparents - Concezio DiDonato (b 1856 possibly in Atina, Frosinone) and Carmela Mascio (b 1868 possibly in Rivisondoli). They had eight or so children in Italy (Lucrezia, Matilda, Nicola, Rebecca, Rosaria, Dominica, Emil) before immigrating to New York in 1900. I believe that Concezio's family came from Atina and I have some record of them going back to 1786 (Antonio, Vittorio and Giovanni DiDonato). I would love to find out more about where they came from and find any record of birth, marriages, siblings, etc. If anybody can give me guidance on how to start, I'd be very grateful. Many thanks!!!

Neither of the above surnames are found today in Atina.
Could this be the entry record

This is definitely Carmela

Amazing that you found that so quickly! I don't think the 1909 ship's manifest entry can be him as he would have been closer to 60 by then and we have a picture of him with all his children, including his two year old son Emil (my grandfather) who was born in NY in 1907. He definitely does not seem to have been on the same ship with Carmela in 1900. In ancestory.com another family tree has the DiDonato relatives going back to Giovanni DiDonato born on Sept. 13 1786 in Altina, Frosinone. Where could a record like that have possibly come from? It also lists that he was married to a woman named Antonia Panaccione. Giovanni is the last entry, but his son's details are there (Vittorio b. 1774) and his son (Antonio b. 1806) also listed as born in Atina. Any ideas about this one? Thanks again!!

Hi!

from this site:
http://www.italiangen.org/VRECLIST.stm

it seems that Concezio died on 1909:

Surname DiDonate
Given Name Concezio
Age 54 y
Month Nov
Day 4
Year 1909
Certificate Number 5505
County Bronx
Soundex D353

Do you have his death certificate? It should have listed his place of birth...

Concezio DiDonato and Carmela Mascio are my great grandparents. Their son Michael (born 1903 in NY) is my grandfather.
Concezio was born 5 Dec 1856, in Rivisondoli to Domenicantonio DiDonato and Rebecca Carmina Buccicone. He married Pasqua Ramicone 18 Jul 1878 and they had a daughter Maria Domenica in Mar 1883. Pasqua died 31 Mar 1887. Concezio then married Carmela Costantina Mascio 2 Jul 1888. Their children born in Rivisondoli were Matilda Clara Trusiana (1889), Hilda Lucretia Ildegonda Michelina (1890), Teresa Rebecca (1894), Rosana (1896). Concezio had made a few trips back and forth from Italy to NY. Carmela along with Mary Domenica, Matilda, Hilda, Tessie and Rose traveled aboard the Forst Bismarck on 12 Mar 1900, all travelling under the name Mascio. The rest of the children were born in NY. Domenic Joseph (1901), Dante Arthur (1902), Michael Philip (1903) my grandfather, Nancy (1905) and the baby of the family Emdio Joseph (Emil) (1907). Concezio died 4 Nov 1909 of Pneumonia.
My research shows the DiDonato and Mascio families all going back to the 1700's in Rivisondoli, L'Aquila, Abruzzo.
Are you Edward's daughter Kim? I would be very interested in sharing more information with you.
