Information on Cantasano and Seccafico

Postby taxi55 » 04 Jun 2009, 20:29

Hi All!

It's been one of those weeks - I have looked and looked and can't find certain info. (I'm considering changing my name from taxi to loser. :) I've made amazing progress with my ancestry search in a short time (many thanks to all of your contributions!) and I am hopeful you can help fill in the gaps on this one.

Here's what I know:
Dominick Cantasano (1874 - 1947?) Born in Craco. Parents: Constantino (1844 - ?) and Camilla D'UrsoSimonetti. Dominick also had a brother Francesco (1872 - ?) but I do not know if he also immigrated. In fact - relatives did not even know that Dominick had a brother. (I will write to the comune for additional info on all of them.)
Josephine Mary Cantasano (Seccafico) (abt 1882 - 1947?) Born in Manhattan, New York (Not sure of her parents - possible mother is Vittoria, but I will obtain birth records for confirmation.)
Domenico and Josephine had 13 children: Amelia, Constantino, James, Pasquale, Joseph, Anthony, Victoria (Vera), Angelina, Mary Amelia, Francesco, Angelo, Santa and Maria.
(Dominick and Josephine died one week apart and the only possible info I found on their deaths ties it to 1947 - but that is not confirrmed yet.)

Dominick immigrated about 1892, according to the 1910 census although relatives thought he immigrated when he was younger - about 6 years old. (I can not find his passenger list.) Relatives told me his parents died in Italy and never immigrated. They told me he possilby immigrated with relatives Joseph and Amelia Tuzio - but I tried searching for their names - as well as his - and nothing matches. His 1910 census has him living on Baxter Street in Manhattan, NY (there were also other Cantasano's on that census, but don't know if they are related. Could be - because they all worked in the paper stock business which Dominick eventually owned.) Dominick eventually moved to Brooklyn, NY.

If anyone can help me locate the 1900, 1920 and 1930 census and immigration/passenger lists, or anything else related to Dominick and Josephine (i.e., naturalization, military, anything : ) I would love it. He had to be somewhere between the time he immigrated in 1892? until his 1910 census - and after ... right???

Thanks!
Sophia

Thanks Laura,

Yes - I had seen this and placed in my files on the chance that it was them even though relatives say she never went by the name Mary. You never know with records this old. :) Guess it couldn't hurt to obtain this marriage certificate to see what's on it.

Did you by any chance have time to search for the census or immigration info? Just curious if anyone else out there had the difficult time I am having. I've witnessed the "miracle findings" you and others on this board have accomplished - pretty amazing - and trust your skills far more than mine. :) I can understand if they did not complete the census but the immigration info? Do you often find that people are just never able to find that info? Just MIA forever? :?

Thanks again for your time Laura - it's a good feeling when someone replies! Enjoy your day!!!

Biff - I am bowing to you right now. :) You are the - person (I'd say man or woman, but I don't know you.)

Well - confirmed a few things:
1. I am lame. (Or the genealogy program my library has - not ancestry - is lame ... or both.)
2. the info family passed down about Josephine NEVER being called Mary ... WRONG.
3. the info family passed down that Domenico's mother was deceased when he was six ... WRONG. If I am reading it correctly, the Ship Manifest shows that he visited his mother - D'Uso Simi in Italy in 1908. (Obviously not dead. Wait until I tell the family this one.)
4. the 1920 census showed that Domenico's daughter lived next door to the man she would eventually marry. (Pretty cool - did not know that.)
5. So - there still may be info out there to explain his 1890 - 1910 gap - correct? Is it possible that the 1890ish passenger list is illegible and will not be returned in a search?

Thanks again Biff - very much appreciated!!!

Based on the following death certificate which I found on a public tree on Ancestry, it looks like Domenico and Maria Giuseppa had two daughthers names Vittoria, one of whom died as an infant.

Sophia,

These folks might be able to help you find information for the Cantasano, Seccafico and D'Urso Simonetti families.

Biff - I am going to have a great weekend thanks to you! This info has helped me start to put the pieces together. So many items are falling into place now - even the reversal of Josephine Marie's name: Maria Giuseppa.

Possible relatives' Passport Applications:
Vito Cantansano
Nicola Cantansano

I keep finding those Cantasano's a lot - think there are five/six of them. Some lived in the same building as Domenico and worked/owned the same paper company. Highly likely it's more than a coincidence - just not sure what the relation is yet.

Based on the following death certificate which I found on a public tree on Ancestry, it looks like Domenico and Maria Giuseppa had two daughthers names Vittoria, one of whom died as an infant.

Geez - half their children never made it out of their 20's.

Did that famliy tree happen to note who Maria Giuseppa's parents/siblings were?

Brother Francesco's WWI Draft Card?

Could be - I'm going to write to the Craco comune for additional info. I also contacted the Craco Society and will check out the yahoo group!

Biff - I am one happy person - thanks!

Have a great weekend!

Unfortunately, it did not have any information on Maria Giuseppa's parents or siblings.

A great weekend to you also.

Hi Biff,

Given your experience, would you say that since Domenico's first immigration info from 1890/1892 could not be located, that it might be so badly misspelled it can't be found?

Thanks,
Sophia
