Cassata Family

Postby smnth921 » 09 Jun 2009, 13:20

I am looking for any information on my great-great grandfather. His name is Michelangelo Cassata. He was also known as Mike or Michael. He was born in Ventimiglia di Sicily in 1875 and came to live in New York City in 1899. He died in 1964. His wifes name was Grace Marie and they had eight children together. I believe she was from the same town but they met and were married in the US.

Thanks to everyone in advance!

Hello and Welcome to the Forum!
We'd all be happy to help :D .
Do you need help with US or Italian records (or both)
Do you have any US records for your family (census, military, ship manifests, etc)?
Thanks!
Valarie

I am looking for anything and everything I can find. I have very little documentation. All I do have is a citizen application for both of them and their funeral mass cards.

Note: may be the same family in this post:

This is actually my grandfathers post from last year. I am picking up on his research for him since he is in poor health.

1899 Michelangelo Cassata
married?

The dates and other information look right but I am not sure about the marriage and the traveling companions.

1899 Grazia La Mantia
may be traveling with family

This could definitely be her! Can anyone make out the information on the relative she was going to join?

Thanks much!!

Possible 1904 marriage record:
(poor transcription of Michael's last name?)

Surname Given Name Marriage Date County Certificate Number

Capato Michelangelo Jan 3 1904 Manhattan 848
Lamantia Grazia Jan 3 1904 Manhattan 848

Awesome!Well, Thank you all for such greath information!

The census information is defintely them!

I am very curious about my ggf being previously married. The arrival record says his wife was named Concetta and they were going to her father whose last name looks like Leone. They had a child named Giovanni who was 1mth old in 1899.

Whats the best way to find out about these people?

It looks like my ggm was also going to her Uncle Giovanni Leone. Her oldest son with my ggf was John.

Alot of these names are very similar especially the Leone. Do you think it is just coincidental.

Is it possible to look up records based on this notation?

Hi!
Since they aren't in the NY Death Record Index, I'm guessing writing to their comune for birth and marriage records would probably be a good next step:

Address:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Ventimiglia di Sicilia
Piazza Santa Rosalia

I think that when you write away to their comune for records you'll probably find that they were linked in some way  .

You could also review your family’s records on microfilm.

Your nearest Family History Center has records for Ventimiglia di Sicilia on microfilm.
The cost is about $6 mo (rent), you’ll need to go to the center to order & view them.

This may help:
Manifest Markings

It appears that the markings indicate that their manifests were checked in 1942 by the Southern District Court of NY, probably as part of the naturalization process.

This website may help:
NYC records by the Italian Genealogical Group
http://www.italiangen.org/

I checked the records on footnote. com, that database is only 31% complete...

You can also try USCIS

Thanks everyone! I have some manual research to do.

Can anyone recommend anyone, or a service, who can research and get copies of Italian records without being too expensive?
