Surname Dea and Cea... Actually Italian?

Postby LindseyAnn » 12 Jun 2009, 00:39

Hi all! My name is Lindsey and I'm new to this site, so excited!

I'm supposedly half sicilan and half Bares. My great grandparents from my father's side come from Sicily, not sure what town. His last name is Dia.

My mother's family comes from Bari, and her maiden name is Cea. I know, it's pretty hilarious. Her full name is Donna Maria Cea Dia now.

Anyway, anyone who is Italian tells me that my last names are pretty rare and do not sound Italian. I myself have never met any Italians with the last names Dia or Cea. I'm wondering if these are ACTUALLY Italian last names, or are from another country and these people migrated to Sicily and Bari.

Anyone else on this site have these last names ???
So curious!

Graziee, ciao ;)

Hi Lindsey and welcome to the forum,

Both names are Italian as you can see at the following website.

Here is another site tht can help you pinpoint where your family is from.

If you can provide us with the immigrants first name, members may be able to locate a ship manifest for your ancestor and locate their exact town of origin.

I just recently joined this site and came across your post from a few years ago which intriqued me because my heritage, also, is half Sicilan (mother's side) and half Barese (father's side).
My maternal grandmother's maiden name ws DIA. I've only met one other person who's last name was DIA and it tuned out she was not related.
I've been told that DIA is of Spanish origin (similar to Diaz, Diez.
(My Sicilan grandfather's last name was TOBIA - of Greek origin; my last name - from my Barese grandfather, is PESCE, easily recognizable as "fish", and my Barese grandmother's maiden name was GRISANTI.)

I was looking at microfilms from grumo ,Bari today and saw the surname Cea a lot , I'm not sure of that was your family but if so, I'd recomend looking into that.

My grandfather was from Bari and our last name is Cea. It is indeed an Italian name.
