Missing Ellis Island Manifests on stevemorse.org

Postby carmine1917 » 20 Jun 2009, 01:05

http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/mm.htm?bac ... morse.org/

I knew that not all manifest were on ellis or ancestry, had no idea or no need to look for the missing manifest until recently.

At the family history center I go to a lady is looking for her grandfather's manifest. She has everything else, naturalization, he was NYPD, etc. just can't find the manifest. If I could figure out how to search the missing manifest, I maybe able to help her. Although they are Irish, I know that my friends on this site will be able to steer me in the right direction.

She sent me this today:
Thanks for your email. I just went to the Castle Gardens web-site, but I was unable to find any info on John Ayres. His DOB: 3/11/1880 and he came from County Carlow, Ireland on April 10, 1897. I am stumped, if you can find him, could you please let me know.

I have been searching for my husbands grandmother and her small sons manifest for 15 years.

On the morse site, you can get everyone who came from a particular town (in italy for me). IF the town name was recorded on the record. I have tried to find her using misspellings (since thats the reason most people cant find their people). I have tried, just using her first name...the childs first and last name..just the word figlio, then figlia. I told my husband they must have been stow aways..lol

Its probably badly misspelled. Recently, I have been indexing records for the FHL and ancestry. As you probably know, some records, you can hardly read..and others have the name misspelled by whomever wrote it. We are told to type what we see..so even if we KNOW its misspelled, we have to type the writers mistake (which is ridiculous, if you ask me).

If you havent already, I would begin to search, changing letters in the name to see if it is there, only spelled wrong.

I also think that some records, just werent put out there. I have eventually found, every single person that I needed, except this grandmother and child.

I love FHL, I ordered almost all the records from Piazza Armerina, Sicily, where my grandparents came from.

My grandfather's last name was Sauli, but they put it in as Savli. I too have done the city search from stevemorse, I have also done the province. My grandmother put the province on her manifest, so she wasn't in the Piazza Armerina list. I do different variations, etc.

I am just trying to help another patron at the FHL or is it the FHC :) She knows the date when the ship arrived, if you read above, I can't view it from this reply. Any idea where to see that manifest? We are located right outside NYC, so I think we have to go to NYPublic to see them. Thanks you.

However... maybe this record could be abt the marriage:

Murphy Catherine Jan 21 1902 #2031 Manhattan

Ayers John Jan 21 1902 #2031 Manhattan

the John surname is mispelled in Ayers, but it is the only matching record....
