Giovino, Staffa, Chieffi lineage in Wilkes-Barre, PA

Postby stauffr » 26 Jun 2009, 16:10

Seeking info on my Grandfather: Salvine, (b. 1894 in Wilkes-Barre, PA) brother of Pellegrino (b. 1889 in Atripalda, Naples, Italy). Step-brothers of Tobias Chieffi (b. 1895 in Wilkes-Barre) & Frank Angelo Chieffi (b. 1897 in Wilkes-Barre). Their mother, Congetta (nee) Giovino: unsure of her marriage status. Pellegrino and Salvine changed their surnames: first to Stauff. Salvine kept it for the rest of his life and family's name. Pelligrino changed his from Stauff to Staffa. Pellegrino, on his 1907 marriage/wedding certificates has his surname as Stauff and names his father only as Sabino. Angelo Chieffi, father of Tobias & Frank Angelo, raised all 4 boys from infancy in Wilkes-Barre. He and Congetta, (and her brother Antonio di Feliciano Giovino) are laid to rest in St Marys Cemetery in Hanover Twp, PA. See 1910 Wilkes-Barre census for further confusion. Chieffi name spelled phonetically: Ckeiffi. SEEKING THEIR PROPER LINEAGES! Whew! Please help me if you can! Thank you! Laura!

Yes! It's them! No search engine would EVER have found this census... or how the census taker spelled "Chieffi"... their Italian accents must have been very thick...
Thank you EVER so much for finding and posting this... By-the-way: Pellegrino's nickname was "John"... called "Uncle John" by his Nieces & Nephews...

Where can I send you flowers? Thanks again!

Yes! You've corfirmed the family story: Pellegrino met his future wife at a fireworks factory in Brazil that Angelo Chieffi owned (or had stock in). I guess they ALL went over there...

You're very welcome! :D here people love to help the others researching their italian roots....

 I believe it should be a little difficult.... I'm italian, living in Italy but thank you very much

Well.... If I understood well you don't know the "real" last name of Pellegrino and Savino... they were sons of the first marriage of Concetta, right?
Or do you believe their real surname was Staffa?

This is because I found an interesting arrival manifest... I don't know if it can be connected to your search but in the doubt I believe it's better for you to see it:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Mar. Anb Campana
Name: Mar. Anb Campana
Arrival Date: 21 Oct 1890
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1863
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Marseilles, France and Naples, Italy
Destination: New York
Place of Origin: Mripalda,Italy right spell Atripalda
Ship Name: Alesia
Search Ship Database: Search the Alesia in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 41
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_557
List Number: 1577
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States

She was travelling with her two sons:

Pellegrino, age 2 years
Savino age 9 months?

I know name and lastname doesn't matches but it's so strange the coincidence of the names of the child... :?
Usually (as in Italy women retain their maiden name even if married) wifes travelled under their maiden name... but , as the child were listed under Campana, possible it was her married name?

I noticed on your Tree on Ancestry.com that Concetta had at least two brothers: Antonio and Vincenzo...
I also noticed that Antonio at his arrival on 1899 stated he was joining Vincenzo in Wilkes Barre.
Considering that usually the first name Vincenzo was "americanized" in James, I believe this could be his 1900 census in Wilkes barre for Vincenzo:

Richard,
....not just a family story.... :D

From Ellisiisland.org here is the 1905 arrival manifest for Antonia Pizzutti (age 15) coming from Sao Paulo (Brasil) travelling with her parents Vincenzo and Teresa Pizzutti and siblings Bettina and Domenico....

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0007

so, possible they really met in Brasil!
The all family was going to New Jersey (jersey City) to join the other son Victor Pizzutti, even if I found that in the 1910 Pellegrino and Antonia were living in Wilkes Barre:

Laura!

Thank you again... I found the other Brazil manifest myself... Ancestry.com immigration search...

The James Giovino info makes sense... I put the info in his profile...

I'm awaiting Salvine's birth certificate from Wilkes-Barre... which SOUNDS like "Roxbury" to the manifest writer... Actually, there was always 5 yrs difference between Pellegrino & Salvine on ALL census & info... so I think it's just a coincidence with the Campana info...

Pellegrino's daughter Concetta is still bright & alive and will be 95 in July... she never knew she had a sister who died in infancy... "Veginna" could be "Virginia"... any other close Italian names similar?

Thanks agin!

Laura! Thank you for your help so far! I think I may need more...
My grandfather did NOT have a birth-certificate... none was on file in the Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, PA files... The Alesis manifest you showed to me looks pretty good now...
I found the very same manifest written in a different handwriting... one says "M. Ant. Compana" and the other has "Mar. Anb. Compana".
Q: Do you know what the abbreviations "Mar." and "Anb." mean? Are they Italian abbreviations?
And, again, concerning Pellegrino's infant daughter "Veginna:" Could it be "Virginia"? ... any other close Italian names similar to the possible misspelling?
My rose plants are blooming... ready to send some! Thanks again!

Ciao Richard!

I believe the correct writing for the Alesia arrival manifest should have been:
Maria Antonia Campana

I know it's different from "Concetta" but the names of her child seemed so "good" for me....

Maybe you can do this:
Contact you nearest Family History Center:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp

and ask them to order for you the microfilms for the Civil Registrations of Atripalda, especially to search at least the first son Pellegrino's birth act (as you know pretty exactly his birth date):

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... o+civile++

From Pellegrino's birth act you'll know his real parents names and last names... and see if it's possible to find also Sabino's birth cert.

And about VEginna I'm sure it was Virginia...

A very nice lady named Cherrie in Atripalda has sent me much wonderful info! I'll reprint what she sent me:
Your ggrandfather Sabino Staffa was married twice. His first wife (Sabina Fiore) died sometime after the birth of twin daughters in 1886. I cannot pin down an exact date of her death as I do not have access to death records but on Sabino's marriage record to Concetta, he is listed a a widower.

Sabino Staffa marries Concetta Giovino 22 September, 1887. I believe that Mary is from Sabino's first marriage to Sabina Fiore and is not the natural daughter of Concetta Giovino. I did find a birth record for a Marianna Staffa born around 1885 but did not write down her information because her mother was not Concetta Giovino and I wasn't sure I had the correct family line. If the research library isn't busy when I work next week, I will look to see if I can locate her birth record.

Here's the full info off the records I found:

Doc# 35 - Marriage: 3 July 1884

Groom: Sabino Saffa (age 31)
father: Pellegrino Staffa
mother: Carmela Fasona

Bride: Sabina Fiore (age 26) (widow of Vincenzo Masi)
father: Nicola Fiore
mohter: Nicoletta Salvatore

Doc# 119 & 120 - Birth - 9 July 1886 - Twin females

Raffaela & Carmela Staffa
father: Sabino Staffa
mohter: Sabina Fiore

Doc# 31- Marriage - 22 September 1887

Groom: Sabino Staffa (age 34) (widower of Sabina Fiore)
father: Pellegrino Staffa
mohter: Carmela Fasona

Bride: Concetta Giovino (age 26)
father: Feliciano Giovino
mother: Raffaela Sabatino

Doc# 64 - Birth - Female - 19 March 1888

Raffaela Staffa
father: Sabino Staffa
mohter: Concetta Giovino

Doc# 26 - Birth - Male - 26 January 1889

Pellegrino Staffa
father: Sabino Staffa
mother: Concetta Giovino

Do you have Concetta's arrival information? I've located a passenger arrival listing for a C. Giovine on Ancestry.com. I believe it may be your ggrandmother arriving with two children even though the genders have been mixed up. The early passenger lists gives very little information so it will be hard to detemine if it's her unless you have more info on her arrival than what you've already posted. Have a look at if you think it might be her.

SS Alsatia, arriving 19 Feb 1892, NYC

Passengers:
C. Giovine, married female, 30
R or M? child, 6 male
P. child, 3 female

All I have for now,
Cherrie

My thanks again to Cherrie (Who was NOT in Italy, as I thought, but in Pennsylvania) and Laura (who IS in Italy). With their help, I have accurately updated my lineage and surname sequence and ideas:

Sabino Staffa (b. 22 NOV 1852 in Atripalda, Italy, d. JAN 1898 in Wilkes Barre, PA, USA) son of Pellegrino Staffa & Carmela Fasona, both also of Atripalda, Italy.

Sabino’s first marriage: to Sabina Fiore (b. 1858, m. 3 JUL 1884) who died soon after birthing twin girls Raffaela & Carmela, (b. 1886) who died in infancy.

Sabino next married Concetta Giovino (b. 21 NOV 1860 in Atripalda, Italy. d. JAN 1926 in Wilkes Barre, PA, USA) (m. 22 SEP 1887). Daughter of Feliciano Giovino & Raffaela Sabatino. Sabino & Concetta first had a foundling daughter Mary (b. 20 JUN 1885 in Atripalda, Italy, d. JAN 1930 in Wilkes Barre, PA). After Sabino & Concetta’s marriage was born Raffaela (b. 1888 in Atripalda, Italy) who died in infancy. Next born: Pellegrino Filippo (b. 26 JAN 1889 in Atripalda, Italy, d. 7 JAN 1954 Jersey City, NJ, USA)

Sabino Staffa emigrated to the USA, arriving (24 JUL 1890). Soon after he changed his surname to “Stauffâ€
