John Lando from Genoa to Scotland in 1850

Postby maggiehill » 28 Jun 2009, 16:19

I have just been informed by an older cousin that John Lando left Italy as there was some sort of vendetta against the family. His father was a Petty Officer in the Italian Navy (possibly Merchant) and arranged for him to go to Scotland in 1850 aged 14.
John Lando’s Father must have known that there were other Italians living in Biggar as we have found out since. The family were named Polleti and came from Como.

1. Where can I find birth details in Italy for that period?
2. Are there any records for the Italian Merchant Navy?

The following is a link to my earlier topic.

John Lando declared Genova as birth place; But it could be some common in Genova province as a well he meaning with Genova the Liguria region capital... for to hope in something needing of to know the John's mother birth surname, so maybe could be helpful for to know better the Genova area where start... the record available for John are only church records, so the birth town must be max precise, and if he born in a big town as Genova, well needing of to know also the parish... anyway knowing almost the mother name could be helpful; for bad luck, because John emigrated very young, it is impossible a search in Genova State archive abt the military service in Italy... regards,

Sujan,

Thanks for the information but all we know is that John Lando left Genoa and went to Scotland in 1850. We also know that his father was a Petty Officer in the Italian Navy (possibly Merchant). His brother was also in the Navy.
That's why I believe the Como connection may be a clue. Why did a 14 year old boy go to all places as a Biggar a market town in Scotland unless he new some one there was it because the Polleti family where there?

The family storey does continue a sea captain from Italy went to West Linton( near Biggar) to try to find John Lando but he was as not at home, a family member then went to Biggar to find the captain but he had left.

Thanks for helping me

Maggie

We have found out that the Poletti family were China Merchants in Biggar Scotland so when in the late 1890's a Ships Captain possibly John Lando's brother arrived in Biggar to try to find his brother but with no luck.

John's brother was probably on the ship supplying china to the Poletti family.

Are there any records of Italian Merchant Navy Ships going to Scotland?

Peter
