Oddo Purgatorio

Postby jm2day » 21 Jul 2009, 09:07

Hello,

I was wondering if there was any information from Italy on Oddo Purgatorio such as birth place and date, parents names, marriage, and immagration info for when he moved to kansas. This site has been very helpful in finding my grandfather's information, (Oswald Purgatorio) I was just hoping I could go further back for a family history since I recently found out about my birth father and this side of my heritage.

Also, was Purgatorio a common name back there? It seems like such an odd name, I wonder why someone's name would be after Purgatory? I was just wondering..

Thank you,
Jolene

I assume Purgatorio is a surname (family name) and not a name (first name). Further the Italian surname dictionary has no listing for Purgatorio nor any variations, alterations or derivations of that name. This indicates that the name is local in origin and may be based upon nicknames or some other local significance. It would appear that the name has religious roots of one sort or another and may also have been imported into Italy and Italianized. =Peter=

Hey Valerie and Laura!

Thank you SO MUCH! You are right, I am totally unfamiliar with any sort of records search..I just recently got interested in this because I never knew anything about my father's side of the family because I never knew him. He just made contact with me and has given me a little bit of information but of course I became really curious..My children and I didn't even know for sure that we were Italian! We are now trying to learn our history and the culture and traditions of Italy.

Thanks so much for your help!

Jolene

Peter!
OOPS! I am SO sorry! I was on my blackberry yesterday and I didnt see it all! Purgatorio is such and odd name that you are probably right about that. I googled it and all that comes up is Dante's inferno "purgatorio". So maybe it is a nickname from that character. But, I did find a lot of response for an artist named Agnese Purgatorio from the Bari region. Do you think she could be a relative? Also where can I find possible list of churches that have records for Oddo Purgatorio's marriage? It must be in Fossato Di Vico, Because he immagrated in 1906 and his son was born in 1908 in Kansas. Any help is greatly appreciated...And again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Jolene,

from your first post here:

As you know Oddo's exact birth date you can request to the Comune of Fossato di Vico (as member VJ wrote you) his "Estratto dell'Atto di nascita completo di eventuali annotazioni".
On the document you'll find his parent's names, his birth date and exact place of birth (address) and the details of his marriage (bride's name, date and place of marriage):

Anyway, you're lucky because the Mormons microfilmed the civil registration for Fossato di Vico and you should be able to search and find by yourself the document you'll like to have:
