Tirol - Tamburini

Postby fjt3 » 23 Jul 2009, 18:36

Hello,

I am at the starting point of trying to discover more about my great grandfather's heritage as well as see whether I am eligible for Italian citizenship.

His name was Joseph Tamburini (changed at some point to Tamburin) and he arrived in the US at Ellis Island in 1895 from Tirol. We know he was born around 1879, and that he moved to Pennsylvania at some point where he met my (US) great grandmother and married/had my grandfather.

His ship was called La Bourgogne, departing from Le Havre, according to the ship's manifest his ethnicity is listed as USA but as far as I can gather this does not necessarily indicate that he naturalized to the States/renounced his Italian citizenship.

I have had a good investigation online but with such little information to go on I must confess that I'm at a loss.

I'm hoping that you might be able to shed some light on how to go about investigating my lineage, it's quite a minefield of information out there when you don't know where to look!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide..

Hello!
Is this the correct manifest?
1895

Joseph stated he was 25 yrs old (born abt 1870)...

Do you have his census records from PA?
They may help.
Where did he live?
Wife's name? Children?

Thanks!
Valarie

Hey thanks - that's the right one yes.. (though the family myth is that he was actually 16 when he arrived but hiked his age to be considered an adult..)

I can't track down his census records though I am trying to.

I don't know where he lived specifically (though the feelers are out to various family members) though I do know his wife's name was Mary.

My grandfather's name was Francis Tamburin and he had at least two sisters, Betty and Mary.

You're welcome!
If you're sure of his birth year and birth location, could this manifest be a possiblity?
Birth year & location is closer to the information you have...

1902 manifest

21 Apr 1902, SS La Gascogne, Le Havre to NY

Giuseppe Tamburini 22 (abt 1879-1880)
- single
- last residence Tyrol Austria
- destination NY
- joining (?)

---

What year was his son Francis born?

Thanks?

hmm, I am told that it's the first one you posted, that was the information my family gave me (though I'd never seen the actual document - thanks for that!) my family had the ship information etc so I'm pretty sure it's Joseph, which is a family name too..

I think it might actually be Trentino where he was from going by some of what I can find on rootsweb etc.. My family's European geography isn't the best but for what it's worth my grandfather definitely knew all the best Italian swearwords..(!)

but to answer your question, Francis was born on the 30th April 1924.

thanks Valarie!

Joseph's wife's name was Mary Romel from what I can gather..

and Joseph himself seems to have changed his birthdate once in the States to 1st June 1880. he is listed as both from Italy and Austria in different records.

I believe it is yes.. Great!

So we've tracked down their US details, now I just have to work backwards so to speak and determine exactly where Joseph was from..
