Edit to add:

I found an interesting 1891 arrival manifest.. it's about a Nunziate Palombo (age 37) travelling with some Panetta (Ferdinando, Francesco and another I can't recognize ), going to Phila. They were listed as Russian 8O but the handwritten is pretty clear and their lastname and first names seem italian... :?

Hi Crescenzo was born in Phildelphia, PA , 11 November 1890
Hi!
Do you have Crescenzo's birth record?
If the only record is his death certificate, his birth location may be incorrect.
Another possibility may be his parents were in Phila & returned to Italy.
---

Laura,
What terrific finds!
---

It appears that both the Palombo and Valente family's maintained their homes in Italy while the husbands & sons traveled back and forth to the US for work. Perhaps the economy was difficult in their towns?

Ciao Val! :D

I agree with you... maybe the informant on the death certificate (Joseph Palombo) stated a wrong birth place for Crescenzo. :?

However Crescenzo's brother Francesco was born in Villa Latina aprox. on 1895, and Angela (sister) on 1886 in Villa Latina too...
I searched also a possible arrival manifest for Benedetta Panetta (Nunziato's wife) with no luck....
This makes me think that Crescenzo too was born in Italy as he stated several times at the moment of his arrivals in the U.S.

Happy Sunday!

This is really interesting as my uncle has Crescenzos birth certificate which says Phili, PA. I will email my uncle to double check but it was a pretty known fact that he was born in PA.

Yes my g-grandmothers stayed in Italy while the husbands worked on the boats to go back and forth! I know one g-grandmother didn't want to move to America. They were from a farming village which even now its common knowledge a majority of the village men left to find work elsewhere.

I spoke to my mum and his passport definetly says born in Phili, PA. All we can think is they didnt assume this when he arrived on the boat and simply wrote he was born in Italy as that is where he was coming from.... I'm trying to get hold of my uncle as he has my g-grandfathers passport.

Francesco was Crescenzos Brother!

This is interesting as Panetta is another name from my familys village and his "inlaws" so to speak were Panettas, his wife was Benadetta Panetta. The other name is Felica ...

*update*
Just spoke to my uncle and he confirmed...

Filomena was his sister and Francesco was his brother.

and now my mum remembers their nicknames :|

from Ellis Island Searches a Giussepe Valente was the brother of Antonio Valente. From looking at addresses it seems my 2 g-grandfathers were living in the same building in Detroit. I'm assuming he called himself Joseph as I know a lot of them "americanized" their names when living there....

Crescenzo came back to Villa Latina to marry. I saw the certificate today when I was in Villa Latina. It says he was born in Philadelphia.

Oh you are brilliant Italysearcher. Can you tell me how I can get a copy of that and birth certificates etc? I'm not back in VL until July 2010.

I'm assuming having Villa Latina written as his place of birth is either ignorance on his arrival or lack of communication.

You can write to the town and request it. They are not big on research though so I don't know how long they will take.

I have lot of information on francesco Alberto Palombo, Crescenzos brother.
Also have photos.
Francesco was my grandfather and is buried in Villa Latina.
His wife Emilia, from a very large Gargaro family , also from Villa Latina is buried in Alexandria, Scotland. Will post lots of info if anyone would find it interesting.

In our family tree there is a PASQUALE VALENTE born Jan 18, 1876
died June 21, 1966
He was married to Loreta Rossi born March 18, 1879.
they had 7 children---Antonio, Luigi, Pietro, Luciano, Felice, Mary Civita, and Loreto.
If you think any of this fits your family I have birthdates for some of the children. Our family lived in Detroit. I probably cannot answer details about the people. My aunt went to Villa Latina and Atina and got our family history.
