Gabrielle Gallo from Sciacca, Sicily to Gary, Indiana U.S.A.

Postby gallor » 04 Aug 2009, 04:39

Hi, I'm looking for my great Grandfather's family. His name was Gabrielle Gallo. He was originally from Sciacca, Sicily (Italy). He went to Gary, Indiana for work somewhere between 1905-1910. Gabrielle settled in Gary, Indiana and never returned to Sicily. My Grandfather (his son) was Ignazio Gallo (born in 1895, died in Cambridge, Ontario Canada in 1985). When Ignazio Gallo was 17 yrs old (1912) he travelled by ship from Sicily to Gary, Indiana to look for his father. He found Gabrielle (his father) and stayed and worked with him for about 4 years. Gabrielle Gallo may have met another woman and may have had children with her. Gabrielle's wife, Liboria Ciancimino was still in Sciacca, Sicily. Gabrielle said to his son, Ignazio that he was never going back to Sicily. Gabrielle asked his wife to join him in the United States, but she did not want to join him. She remained in Sicily. They remained separated. My Grandfather, Ignazio returned to Sicily. Gabrielle Gallo had only 1 son in Sicily (Ignazio). Ignazio married in Ribera, Sicily and settled there.

My great Grandfather, Gabrielle Gallo may have gone under the name Gabe or Gabriel, I'm not sure. I have photos of my Grandafather, Ignazio taken in Indiana when he was 17 years old. My Grandfather Ignazio (his son) learned to speak and write English while he stayed in Gary, Indiana. We know this is where Gabrielle lived as we have the original letters from there. My Grandfather Ignazio went back to Ribera, Sicily to his Mom's. Ignazio's intention was to get married in Sicily, and return to Indiana. But, then something changed in immigration, and he couldn't go back. Ignazio Gallo married Rosaria Manzone in Ribera, Sicily. Later, in the early 1960's, Ignazio and his immediate family immigrated to Canada (Cambridge, Ontario).

If anyone has any information on Gabrielle Gallo from Gary, Indiana please email me. My father is 77 years old and he would like to know (and me too) what happened to his Grandfather. I may have cousins in Indiana, or other parts of the U.S. Thank you so much. Rose Gallo

Hi Gallor and welcome to the Forum!

I found several interesting arrival manifests for your ancestors :D

it seems that on July 1907 Gabriele's wife Liboria and her son Ignazio tried to sail to the U.S. but their names were crossed out... this is to say that they didn't travel :!: :

Ignazio stated he was 18, single, Ribera as last residence and place of birth. He was leaving in Ribera his mother Liboria Ciancimino and was joining his relative Giuseppe Catalano in brooklyn. At a second time his destination was corrected to Chicago -- IL

From the site Ellisisland.org you can see there were two others manifests for him but his name was crossed out, it means he didn't travel those times.

Gallo Ignazio July 24, 1913:

Gallo Ignazio, August 1, 1913 (didn't sail):

his declarations were that he was leaving in Italy (Ribera) his mother Liboria Ciancimino and was going to Canton - Ohio to join his father Raffaele Gallo

Maybe the officials mispelled the first name of his father?

Trying to find other records...

Hi Laura, Thank you for the information. It is a good start. I'm looking for the first time Gabrielle (or Raffaele) Gallo sailed from Sicily to New York.
I believe it was in 1900?

Also, where can I find out more information about Gabrielle Gallo's life (if children were born in the United States, where he lived in later years, and date of death, cemetary, etc.). Please advise. Thank you!

Rose,

If you would like someone here to check the census records, you need to give more clues that you have found on your letters, such as the address and the year of your letters.

Rose,

Ii seems very strange to me he had another family in the U.S. (but everything is possible  )
The first arrival for his wife Liboria (travelling with him) it was on 1920, and it seems Raffaele/Gabriele was 65 years old.
Do you believe possible that he brought his wife in the U.S. even if having another family?
There is a little discrepancy on the 1920 arrival manifest that makes me think.... Raffaele Gallo is listed as married while Liboria is listed as single but probably was an error...
However I agree with Bette, if you have letters could you track down years and place of residence?
From all these documents it seems he lived in Illinois.

My opinion is that Ignazio went to the U.S. for first on 1913 when he was 18.
On 1920 he came back to Italy to Marry and then went back (alone) to the U.S. on 1923.
As his mother reached him on May 1920 I can suppose they came back in Sicily togheter between may and the end of that year.
Possible Raffaele stayed in America.

I searched for Raffaele's census and found some possible but in other states...
From the 1920 arrival manifest it seems he was born on 1855... Do you know his real birth year?

one of the possible censuses I found is this, but age doesn't match...

Thanks pink67 and Laura for your replies.

I believe that Gabrielle was born in 1855 (because he was 65 when he came to America), so the death information you found could be him. Is it possible to find out the cemetary location (which one he is buried in)?

Also, what is the date that Gabrielle Gallo first sailed from Sicily to New York? Was it in 1900? Can you please send me the manifest? I recall reading that my Grandfather, Ignazio was only 5 yrs old when his father sailed to NY.

Thank you for your assistance. I really appreciate the time you've put into looking for this information.

You're welcome Rose :D

I'm having no luck finding the first arrival manifest for Raffaele/Gabriele Gallo in the U.S.

At the moment of his second arrival on May 1920 (with his wife Liboria) he stated he was in the U.S from 1900 to 1919...

The Cemetery were Raffaele Gallo (who died in Joliet on 1932) was buried, is listed for sure on his death certificate. I have no proof that it's the right Raffaele.
If this man is the same of the 1930 census in Joliet he was born aprox on 1871.
But it's also possible the age on the 1920 arrival manifest was wrong...

You can follow this link to request the document:

http://www.idph.state.il.us/vitalrecords/deathinfo.htm

and establish if he was your ancestor.

Hi Laura,

Would you be able to find out if Ralph Gallo is still living or if he died? If dead, what year did he die and what city? Thanks again.

Rose,

I'm sorry, I don't understand... For Sure Ralph Gallo (living in Joliet in the 1930 census) died...
Maybe the death certificate's details I found are concerning him..
The only way to establish if he was "your" Ralph Gallo is to ask for the death certificate.
On the certificate the informant stated were the person was born, if he ws married, the cause of the death and the cemetery were he was buried.
Hoping that the person who declared all these things knew Ralph Gallo's details of life....

Are there any important details on the letters you have? could you write here the years on the localities?

Thanks Laura. Of course, Ralph is dead (don't know what I was thinking). I will have to look over the letter which my Aunt has.

Dear Rose,
I have had some wonderful luck with finding people based on old family letters that both my mother and my aunt had. I would highly encourage you to make a copy of the letter and envelope that your aunt has. You never know when just a small piece of information contained in that letter will yield a wealth of information later on. This is a fascinating journey where every piece of the puzzle is important!
