Palmieri family information-needing help beyond USA

Postby misschristi16 » 07 Aug 2009, 20:44

I am researching our family and have gotten to the point where I found my Grandfathers manifest on coming to America. I am needing help from this point on.

He arrived in America on Nov. 5, 1912, dates match some family records. His name is Luigi Palmieri.

He is from Sessa Aurunca, Caserta Italy. We also believe he had a brother named Orasio. I am not sure if I spelled that right, but, I believe I found that he was on a ship to America on March 19, 1914. We have only rarely heard of him. But, the town on the manifest resembles the town on my grandfathers manifest. They spelled it Lessa Aurimca, Caserta.

I am stuck here. How do I find information on them in Italy. Their parents names, any other family members, ages, dates of birth, etc. Almost all the elders in our family have passed, and most dont remember the history told to them before our grandfather passed away in the late 1970's.

I could really use some help going past just our close relatives in the USA. I would really appreciate any help anyone has to offer.

Thanks--C~

Hello and Welcome to the Forum!

If you have your US records for Luigi Palmieri (with his birth date especially), you may want to write to your grandfather's comune for his birth record. It will have his parents' names and other terrific information.
After you can confirm who his parents were, you may want to go ahead and order microfilm for Sessa Aurunca.
On the microfilm, in the Civil Registration, you can look for his siblings, his parents' marriage record and more (assuming births and marriages happened in Sessa Aurunca)

Hi
I looked at your manifests, you're right they certainly appear to be brothers.
Orazio is joining Luigi in CT in 1914.
Both Luigi and Orazio stated they'were leaving their father Pasquale in Sessa Aurunca.
Have you found the brother 'Michele' that Luigi was joining in 1912 (on his manifest)?
Michele may have listed his mother's name on his manifest.
Another clue would be what the brothers named their 1st son & 1st daughter.
Do you have their census records?
Thanks!
Valarie

Italian Naming Traditions
There has been a strong custom in Italy that determines how children are named:

The first male is named after his paternal grandfather.
The second male is named after his maternal grandfather.
The first female is named after her paternal grandmother.
The second female is named after her maternal grandmother.

hello VJ
I was reading your posts and want to thank you for all the information.

I have a question--how did you find that Orasio put on his manifest that he was joining his brother, left his father Pasquale, etc. I have never before seen that information but would love to have it.

Please send me the link or where you found it as I would really like to have it.

Also, where do you find the military records that was also posted?
So much that I did not know to search.

Please fill me in! Thanks! :D

WOW! Awesome!

The war registration card lists our grandmothers name! Same town in CT where he lived. Also states that he had small pox marks on his nose--that is the reason we always heard he came to America, that when he was little he had small pox. It made him a bit weaker, so they sent him to America for a better life than what he could have gotten in Italy.

Sure sounds like the same man!
I really appreciate your help!
Thanks.
