Repositories of ancestry information in Italy?

Postby sjsoko » 20 Aug 2009, 19:13

My wife, my parents and I will be traveling to Italy next week. Part of our trip will be in an area of Campania near where I believe my mother's family is from (Giano Vetusto). I'd like to surprise my mother by being able to perhaps locate additional information about our family locally in the region, but don't know where such records might be maintained. Is there a government organization that maintains birth records? Are they maintained by regional churches or libraries? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I certainly plan to use this site when I return to further the research we have regardless of our success or not on our upcoming trip.

regards,
scott

The civil records ( from 1816 year at current time) are in the Town Hall -

Ufficio Servizi Demografici
via Municipio, 4
81042 Giano Vetusto (CE)
Italy

the same civil records from 1816 to 1929 , microfilmed by Mormons
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... +Giano+Vet &columns=*,0,0
I believe that this is a good way for a genealogical search; because in the Town Hall the civil records are no availble for the public, but only for officer, that relaying certificates: births, marriages, deaths...
so if you need of certificates, having right data you can ask it, or in person or by letter/email writing art above address or by email

If you don't have any luck with the town, try the parish priest. Be sure to leave a donation. The town should ba able to provide you with his telephone number.

Wanted to post a thank you for the information received here. September 8th while returning from Sorrento to Rome for our flight home, we stopped in Giana Vetusto at the municipio using the address given. The gentlemen that work there are terrific. My mother had photocopies of her grandmothers passport and a few other vital statistics which was ample information for Giovanni to pull out a book or two of bound papers that showed the details of her birth in the city. Turns out she also had 13 brothers and sisters that we did not know about, and that we might possibly be related distantly to one of the other gentlemen that worked at the municipio. After being given of few copies of the pages and snapping a few pictures (with the permission of the staff), Giovanni was kind enough to escort us to the street where my great-grandmother was born, as well as her church. We had a wonderful experience - needless to say, my mother was thrilled.

Thanks much for your help.
