Trying to Find Hometown and/or Naturalization Info

Postby puppetgrass » 24 Aug 2009, 04:54

Hi everyone -

I am new to doing genealogy research and am trying to find two pieces of information: 1. if my great grandfather ever became a naturalized us citizen, and 2. what his birth city was.

I have figured out a few things from census documents and ship manifests. What I have confirmed is below:

Name: Giuseppe Cammarota (also went by Joseph)
Immigrated to US: 1908
Birth: 1888 (ish)
Lived: Brooklyn, Queens, NY
Married to: Maria (Mary), 6 kids

I've been told he was born in Salerno, however a lot of the other "facts" family members knew turned out to be incorrect so I'm not sure. I did find a "birth location - other" listed as arguavella but nothing comes up when I search that.

I haven't been able to find any naturalization documents, however I also can't find my mom's and I know all of those documents so I don't have confidence in my lack of results. Is there anyone more experienced who can point me in a better direction?

Thanks!

I think you may be looking for "Acquavella"...in the Salerno, Campania area.

On the 5/10/1908 manifest for the Hamburg. Can't be sure...but the one I found says he was going to meet his father Gennaro in Philly. Looks like he was scheduled to travel with a 'Sofia Giordano' (Mother-in-law of Gennaro)...is she a familiar name? She didn't make the voyage. It looks like his last residence was Casal Velino (not far from Acquavella) and left no one in Italy.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for your help - the census listing is definitely him! I think the WW1/WW2 is not him as no one has any recollection of him serving and the census lists him as an alien in 1930's (probably would not have served in the US). The shipping manifest is a possibility but it also could also be the Guiseppe in Philly - I guess talking to the towns to try and get the birth certificates will determine that. It would be so cool if that was him :)

I guess our next step is to try to find the birth certificate and/or if he was ever naturalized (the Giuseppe in PA was). I'm beginning to think he never was a US Citizen (which would be good for me if I understand the bloodline rule!) - does anyone have any other good tools for doing naturalization searches? I don't know how to prove the absence of a record...

This is so exciting! Thanks for everyone's help! I'm new at this but may have found a new hobby!

Hi Everyone,

I am new to doing Genealogy research and would love some help and/or advice.

My wife, her father and I are going to Cefalu, Sicily in a few weeks and we want to find out more information about her paternal grandfather & his hometown. We've pieced together the following information via Military Records & Naturalization Papers and Ancestry.com:

Name: Joseph (Giuseppe) Testa
Born: November 24, 1889
Place: Cefalu, Sicily
SS# 321-16-9799 received in 1938
Lived in: Chicago, Illinois
Died: February 4, 1989 in Bloomingdale, Illinois
Naturalized: June 24, 1918

Also, I went on SicilianFamilyTree.com and I THINK the below information is about him & his family but that's what I'd like to find out for sure:

Father: Antonino Testa
Mother: Rosa Brocato
Film# 1964475
Record # 429

Finally, does anyone know what the Film # & Record # mean and how to view them?

Any help would be most appreciated!!
