Researching relatives from Caulonia

Postby lynnef » 27 Aug 2009, 15:47

Can anyone who has researched their Caulonian relatives share their experience(s) with me specifically concerning securing vital records from Caulonia? Thanks so much. :)

The LDS church has vitals records available through their family history centers. You can get tons of information. The key is that you'll need patience and persistence. The films are often difficult to read and you'll need to get used to the terms and handwriting. I strongly recommend you take one if not both of these books:

Italian Genealogical Records: How to Use Italian Civil, Ecclesiastical & Other Records in Family History Research by Trafford Cole

Genealogists Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors: How to Find and Record Your Unique Heritage by Lynn Nelson

Both books have handwriting samples, blank forms and common translations. Stick with it and you'll find lots of info!

Thanks for your reply, gregwa. I do plan on visiting the local LDS Family History Center in Syracuse, New York the next time I'm out that way.

What I was specifically asking in my original post was if there were others on this board who had done research on their Caulonian relatives and what they're experiences were in trying to obtain records from the Ufficio di Stato Civile in Caulonia. I've had no luck thus far and was hoping others had better luck.

Thanks again for your reply. :)

I know this isn't much, but it's a work in progress. Nuccia has on her Calabria Exchange a few scattered years of Caulonia Vital Records indexes. Perhaps you might like to have a look?

Hi, James. I've already checked out the Calabrian Exchange, but I find nothing relating to my MGGF who was born in 1864 and my MGGM who was born in 1882. Thanks for your help. :)

Lynn,

I can't remember if you have tried talking with Lou Loccisano. He may be able to help. I haven't been to the FHC in months now but I will go through my indici. I think I may have a few more Caulonia records on my cd's that I never got around to uploading.

Hi Nuccia,

I sent an e-mail to Lou Loccisano back on July 22nd, but have heard nothing.
