Help from someone with access to ancestry.com

Postby donnawright » 04 Sep 2009, 11:16

My cousin tells me his father (and my uncle) came to America through Philly. I looked through ancestry.com for the information that I, a non-subscriber, can see.

There is an entry for Alfonse Groce and nothing else even close to his actual name of Alfonso Gerace. His son, now 82, tells me he lived in Pianopoli (Catanzaro) and should have immigrated to Wellsville OH. I estimate his immigration in the range of 1905 - 1920 or thereabouts, but just a guess.

His DOB is 9-14-1892

Is there anyone who can help me with this, and is it possible to get an image of the manifest? I'd like to look for annotations as well for perhaps citizenship reference.

I saw the NY manifest awhile ago but put it on the backburner because of the relative saying he was from Pianopoli. And perhaps he was at some point, but still living in Nicastro and born in Nicastro according to the documents you provided.

I sent a request to another family to ask if they ever heard about a stepfather and the name Mancuso.

It seems too coincidental that Angelo and Alfonso have the same birthdate and are from Columbiana County Ohio. Since others complete the forms, an error on the part of that person would explain the Alfonso/Angelo discrepancy.

Thank you for your response. The son of Alfonso (82 now) very quickly and confidently said his dad came through Philly when I asked him. More work needed.

hi donnawright
My father talks about the gerace family that lived in wellsville and that later moved to upper darby, pa. It seems that his family was close to the family 1930-1950. My father Bruno Gerillo was sent to Upper Darby when he was 15 to represent the family at a Gerace wedding. (abt 1949)

Now does this seem to match the alfonso gerace family that you are following?

Cathy Green - we are definitely talking about the same family! Can we communicate further? I haven't put too much effort into this part of the family history yet. It is my mother's sister who married into the Gerace family. I will pm my email address and perhaps we can share more. Thank you for making contact. I am interested in the "family tree," but I am also interested in any stories and information that bring the flavor and color of their lives. Your little post has done that for me.
