Ponziano's relatives in Troia

Postby ponzi1 » 28 Sep 2009, 04:48

My family is searching for my grandfathers relatives and pedigree in Italy because I will be going there for the first time soon and may visit Troia - the town where he came from.
Now, I know this is odd, but we are not sure of his original last name. For some unknown reason he changed his last name from Manno or Mannino to Manning shortly after arriving in USA. This does complicate seaches but less than you might imagine because his first name is very uncommon. Most evidence (mostly anecdotal) points to Manno as the origional last name. There are plenty of Manno's in nearby Ridgeway, PA.
His Ellis Island records have him arriving in 1903 as Ponziano Manine but I wonder though if that is a misspelling. Is Manine even an Italian name?
Ponziano died in the 1918 flu pandemic in Brockway, PA. and my grandmother soon therafter so primary-source info was never passed down.
Thaks in advance for any help or advice.

The name Manna is specific to Troia, I could not locate however the surname Manine in all of Italy...to see for yourself the surname distribution, you can use the following two sites:

I think the correct lastname was Manna
he was travelling with his step-brother Giuseppe Trevisonni and joining his mother Filomena Landini in Brockway, PA.

As Wldspirit wrote, there lastname Manine doesn't exist, you can find Mannini, Mannino, Mannina...

the similar surname in Troia are MARINO and MANNA; I believe MANNA right, as other friends suggested; I believe that other people, maybe related with your ancestor, with MANNA surname emigrated and the final destination was also Brockway, PA:
Angela Manna from Troia: joining at Salvatore brother

travel crossed...
Salvatore Manna:

just for let you know that the surname Manna is the spell ...highly probable ...

Wow! This is great information to get me started. Seeing the actual ships manifest makes a difference - it says Manna pretty clearly, not Manine. I guess the people doing the tedious transcribing of Ellis documents make a lot of mistakes so I should have checked the origional.
Thanks again.

There are 14 addresses listed for persons carrying the MANNA surname in Troia:

PagineBianche.it

If for some reason the link reverts to the homepage, enter surname in cognome, Troia in dove and click cerca.
