D'Urso & Maugeri from Aci Sant'Antonio, Provin

Postby mdmitchell » 06 Oct 2009, 17:59

I am trying to find information on my ancestors Stephano D'Urso (dob 3/15/1874) and Antonia Maugeri (dob 1/2/1879) who were both born in Sant'Antonio, Catania, Sicily, Italy. I believe they married (both Catholic)in the same town in 1899. We know they came to the US in 1905 (Ship name unknown) and settled in Lawrence/Methuen MA. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Wow you guys are fast! Thanks.

Valarie, I am just diving into this with another cousin and I found you on the internet... this is a great place. I have not been able to find anything on the sites I am using so this is a lot real fast. That is probably his draft card, but the address on Portland St. is new to me.

Riccardo, I am not sure what the FHL is, can you direct me to it as it sounds like there info is available and I will be able to work back further than them. Thanks! ( I figured this one out! )

VJ that is the correct census from 1920 so that Portland address is correct. My grandfather was John listed with his brothers, there were 8 total boys born.

Stefano was only married once, but I know he traveled back and forth and that we still have family back in Italy, we just do not know who they are. My family did a great job keeping track of everyone. :(

That last name Conti rings a bell, but who knows.

Portland St. address and the Market St. address are one block apart in Lawrence with back yards touching... that is them.

I checked the white page listing and there is only one D'Urso and 31 Maugeri's in that town so I have some writing to do after I get the correct dates of birth.

The ages on the census from 1920 and 1930 show I have wrong years as they are consistant ages and they were married either 1899 or 1900.

That 1907 ship record is not them as the kids names are wrong, but that is most likely a distant relative from the same town.

Thanks again for the leads andf documents, I have a lot more than I did a day ago which is awesome.

Hello!

Giuseppe = Joseph
Salvatore = Sam

Antonia would have traveled under her maiden name
also, 'U' is often transcribed incorrectly as a 'N'
Mangeri = Maugeri

Got it. You see I am still new and learning all of this. The rest of my family is English/ Scotish/ Irish so it is a little easier on the names. :)

Sounds like we need to see the birth records on both and that should give us parents names with possible ages so we can work this back further. It is my understanding that both these families lived in Aci Sant'Antonio for a long time before immigrating so we should be able to work this one back a few more generations.

Thank you again to everyone that has helped me, it is greatly appreciated.

-Mike
