Looking for more information on Pietro Bisignano

Postby zeliack » 16 Oct 2009, 16:11

Hi. I'm having a bit of trouble in determining the birthdate of my great-grandfather so that i can then get a birth certificate on him. (would i need any more info prior to contacting the appropriate party?)

His U.S. name was Peter Bisignano.
He was married to Mary Bisignano.
=> This has been verified by the 1930 census
(all children on this census are accurate)

His Italian name was supposedly Pietro Antonio Bisignano
His wife's name was Maria Stella Caruso.
=> My father remembered her name to be "Mary Stella" (by pronunciation)
=> This information comes from Family Search . Org
=> Many of the children were born in Colorado based on the 1930 Census; A Colorado marriage of 1912 seems accurate.

The WWI Registration says that his birthday was June 29th, 1982. I believe this is his card because the spouse's name is a match in addition to the fact that my father had said before that he died a young death due to being coal miner. Dad thought he had died in his 40's, but family search says 1941..so 50's it might be.

I'm uncertain of whether this is the manifest for him:
The arrival date according to the census says that he immigrated in 1906.
However, it says on the following image on line 15 that he was 13 and thus would have been born in 1882-1883.
Manifest

Birthdates:
I called Family Search and was told that the "around 1884" was just a guess so it doesn't seem to be accurate.
The WWI record was 1882. I'm not sure how accurate those are, but considering it seemed to match up with the manifest, it seemed possible.
The problem that bothers me now is that the census with the ~1888 birthdate is 6 years off of the WWI date. (search for peter bisignno on ancestry; it was transcribed improperly)

Since according to the census, peter had came in 1906 and mary came in 1910: I assumed that I would be able to find them in the 1920 census to see if his birthdate matched 1882 or 1888. Unfortunately, I have failed in being able to find it.

If there is any more info anyone can find on this, or be able to tell me whether anything I have found is incorrect: please PLEASE help.

Oh last of all: the 1930 census shows that neither mary nor peter were naturalized before albert was born (1921). Is there a way to verify this?

However I believe correct the birthdate on WWI draft registration card... by Mormon's microfilms you can search the birthrecords of Spezzano della Sila - town originated by 2 villages: Spezzano Grande ( where your ancestor came from) and Spezzano Piccolo

Topic Italy, Cosenza, Spezzano della Sila - Civil registration

Titles Registri dello stato civile, 1809-1910 Spezzano della Sila (Cosenza). Ufficio dello stato civile

on the ship's manifest it are no markings of naturalization..
hoping helpful,
best regards,
suanj
PS the other 2 Bisignanos (travelling with Pietro) on the ship's manifest( Luigi and Salvatore) also coming from Spezzano, well they was related with your Pietro?

Truthfully, I'm not quite sure.

Could you take another stab at the 1920 census?
None of the children were born yet in 1910 so I wouldn't be able to verify his identity w/o a wife/kids.
In 1920 though, he has a few children. For example, Concette should be about 6.

From the site of the State Archive of Cosenza:
http://poster.beniculturali.it/MW/index.php?en/1/home

Codice SIAS IT-ASCS-F680258

I noticed on Familysearch.org that Pietro's parents are listed as Giacinto Bisignano and Rachela Ragano. Rachela's correct maiden name was Rogano...

Here is another Pietro's brother:

Codice SIAS IT-ASCS-F680258

Raffaele's last name sure was mispelled...

Thank you!! :)

It seems the birth year of peter is different between the 1920 and 1930 census but those are indeed his children.

I plan on attempting to get italian citizenship:
Should i stick with the WW1 birth date?
Additionally, whats the best way to retrieve the certificate? Going in-person really isn't an option but another thing that bothers me is that i supposedly need to "prove" my relationship to him.
Does this mean i need to get my father's and grandfather's birth certificates first in order to prove it?

--
Laura thank you. I'm gonna go build a new family tree. Ancestry's is a bit too complicated for my taste.

:D
On the site of the State archive of Cosenza there is (I belive) the birth date for Rachela Rogano (Peter's mother)

Codice SIAS IT-ASCS-F680840
Stato Civile, Comune di SPEZZANO DELLA SILA.
Registro numero 39, atto numero 30 di pagina -
Rachela Rogano nato/a il 07/05/1848

da Gaspare Rogano, bracciale, 47 anni e da Concetta Pucci, 30 anni

have you been able to locate pietro on the site? I've tried different misspellings of the last name but no luck.

Since its got his siblings's bdays...it'd be great if it had his.
