RAPHAEL CHURCH / CIACCIA ARRIVAL NEW YORK 1870

Postby carolinechurch » 27 Oct 2009, 01:16

I have found the ships manifest for Raphael CHURCH, b 1818 also known as Raphael CIACCIA.
He arrived in New York twice.
First time 21 June 1870 on the New World
Second time 3 March 1880 on the Italy
I have also found him in the 1880 census in Brooklyn.
He ended up back in London by 1891, so I'm not sure if there would be any other little treasures I could find about him? I have no experience with genealogy in the USA.
I found his naturalisation on October 20, 1876, but all it seemed to be was an index listing with very little information, should I expect to find anything else? I have never seen one before so was a bit disappointed. The numbers on it are vol 71 record 425.

His wife was Mary Eliza b1817 London.
Searching for my great x3 grandfather Raffaele CIACCIA, also known as Raphael/Ralph CHURCH. He was born in Napoli around 1792 and arrived in London before 1812 with his brother Saverio CIACCIA, where they married sisters Ann and Jane FURNEAUX. He switched between CHURCH and CIACCIA all his life, which has made it difficult enough to pin him down. I want to find his origin in Italy.

Naturalization records prior to 1906 may list very little information. Seventy five percent of the 1890 census was destroyed due to fire.
Did he own property in the US? Did he marry in the US? Any children born here in the US? Did he belong to any organizations that you know of? Did he have any family here that may have named him in a will?

Did he reside in the same town on both arrivals?

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
I really wanted to know if I was missing anything from the naturalisation document, but I guess not.
I know very little about what took him to New York, though he had listed his occupation as 'mariner' earlier, as did his father.
He lived in Hudson Avenue Brooklyn in 1880, and worked as a watchman, but was married in London, to an English wife.
I have nothing else to tell me about his time in the US. I'm just always ultra curious to glean any extra pieces of information other than dates.

Yes it is, thank you.
When he arrived in the US for the second time, another passenger, Henry CHURCH was also listed with his wife on the ship manifest, and they may possibly be brothers, but I have no proof of it yet.
Henry seems to have settled in Massachusetts
I'm having a lot of trouble because they kept using 2 names, CHURCH and CIACCIA and numerous spellings of CIACCIA...

And thank you so much for the Brooklyn link, this is going to keep me entertained for quite some time, much appreciated!

Henry and wife 1880 census, still listing Cigar Maker as occupation, as on the manifest, but the above marriage record is not the same Henry, yet interesting nonetheless.

Thank you both so very much.

Suanj, I had the English records, but the 1870 census for Brooklyn is new to me, well done for finding it with the spelling! Is there an actual address?
Does it say what relation Walter CHURCH aged 15 is to the head? He is the right age to be my grandfather, but he would the nephew of the head?
This Raphael born c1818 is the son of Rafaele CIACCIA born c1792 in Napoli, who is my great x3 grandfather.
He arrived in London from somewhere in Napoli before 1812 when he had his wedding banns announced. His brother Saverio CIACCIA arrived there around the same time, and they married 2 sisters.

Wldspirit, yes I am pretty sure after going back through my files that this Henry CHURCH is mine, and is Raphael CHURCH's brother. I think he has married twice, first to Jane then to Alice, so will see what I can find. (The birth date on his marriage is incorrect at 1844, he was born in 1823)
I have his 1851 census also, I think that makes me sure enough.

I really appreciate your help with this complicated piece of my family.
My tree is on Ancestry and is public: CHURCH family tree, if you search Raffaele CIACCIA UK results only.

Thanks Suanj.
I had hoped it would be like the English census where it says wife, visitor, grandmother etc.
I will look for an arrival for Walter in NY now.

I have access to the world edition of ancestry, I looked thru several records
of interest. It is my belief that we have several members of the family in records, but linking them one to another.....not so easy! Cigar maker is listed for more than one family member, both here and abroad. There is also a repetition of first names within the family.

Have you been able to identify the parish they attended? Parish records are a great resource when available.

You are in good hands with Suanj, she is truly a master and can find the proverbial needle in a haystack!!

Without having access to the US site I can't narrow down the arrival of Walter CHURCH to New York, as there are 7 of them.
He was born in 1854, so would have arrived from London in 1869 or 1870
He ended up back in London, but this trip to the US could explain why he was missing for a while if it is him.
Please can someone check the shipping records for me?

I cannot find Walter entry in USA, but maybe you have also this record:
1851 England Census
about Raphl Church
Name: Raphl Church
Age: 60
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1791
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Naples

Civil parish: Wapping
Ecclesiastical parish: St John
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Street Address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Registration district: Stepney
Sub-registration district: Shadwell
ED, institution, or vessel: 1e
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 116
Household Members: Name Age
Raphl Church 60 head mariner, born in Naples
Ann Church 19 daughter
Mary Church 13 grandaughter
Patrick Connelly 20 son in law
Nicholas Coff 28 lodger, captain, born in Naples
by this census you say that the Raphael senior was born in Napoli, true?
the Nicholas Coff surname, well it could be Cioffi also present in Napoli area... could be related in some way to Raphael sr?

Hi Suanj, yes I have this census.
This is the Raffaele/Raphael I am trying to trace in Italy, here he is living with his daughter and her husband, using the name Church.
Interesting about Nicholas Coff, I have not been able to find another reference for him, but think they must have the wrong spelling for his name if he is Italian.
The street they lived in was full of lodging houses with a lot if Italian sailors living there, so I imagine many people came and went.
I have wondered if there are any records of Italian shipping / mariners.
Thanks,
Caroline.
