Searching for where in Italy my GGGP's were from *long

Postby Rodio » 21 Nov 2009, 22:45

I am new to this forum. I became interested in my family's geneaology doing research for a jure sanguinis application for Italian citizenship. I applied through my GGF's line. My GGM was culturally Italian, spoke Italian and very little English, but was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. I am wondering if anyone on this board could help me link her family to their origin in Italy. I am including all variations (mistakes) on the docs I have so far:

My GGM's info:

Rafaela Maria DeLuca, born Apr 16, 1889, Montevideo, Uruguay, as listed on her birth cert. and marriage cert. Her DOB on her naturalization papers and death cert. is 4/16/1888.

Her maiden name was listed as DeLuca on her birth cert., Delucci on her official marriage cert., Luca on her church marriage record, and DeLucca on her naturalization and death certificates.

Her birth certificate is a photocopy of the original record, and is handwritten in Spanish, and is of poor quality. Her parents' record on the certificate:

Father: Vicento De Luca, 28 years old, from Italy
Mother: Filomena Nosati, 30 years old, from Italy

Paternal grandparents: Forica (sp?) DeLuca and Rafaela Daciscila (sp?)
Maternal grandparents: Salvador Nosati and Isabel Belacca (sp?)

On her marriage cert, father is listed as James DeLucci, residing in Lattimer Mines, PA. She was married Sept, 25, 1904, in Lattimer Mines, PA. The church record, in Latin, has her parents as Vincenti Luca and Filomenae Cosati.

She naturalized in the US on Aug 23, 1954, and changed her name to Phyllis Mary. The naturalization petition lists NYC as her port of entry to the US on May 16, 1901. No ship is listed.

She died in California, Mar 2, 1966. Her parents are listed as James DeLucca and Florence Cusate on her death cert.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks for all who read it and any help you might have.

Hello!
Do you have Raffaella Maria DeLuca's siblings names & ages?
Not sure if you have James (Vincenzo) & Filomena (Florence) De Luca's census records in Hazle, Luzerne, PA
All years (1900-1930) are on ancestry. com
We'll be happy to link them if needed
Thought this 1901 manifest was interesting

Thanks for the reply, Valarie.

I have no info on any of Rafaela's siblings. The 1901 info was interesting, as my GGF (Rafaela's husband) was from Rodio, Salerno, Campania. But I wonder why there is no listing of Rafaela with this Filomena Cusati. Perhaps she is listed as Cusati instead of De Luca, as that is Italian custom, and she was traveling without her husband.

I do remember trying to search the censuses for James (Vicenzo) De Luca and Filomena Cusati a few years ago when I was doing my research, but I don't remember finding anything.

Thanks for your help.

Tony

Tony, I'm glad we could help.
I added the detained page after you posted.
Looks like your family.
Best guess, Filomena is Raffaella, Carmela is her sister Millie
(Millie is on the 1910 census)

Tony,
Great!
Please let us know what else we can do to help.
(I added a few details after you posted, no wonder you couldn't find their census records)
