Bassi and Ludivici family in Philippines

Postby caz2k » 14 Dec 2009, 23:43

Looking for information about my family history on my mother's side. My grandfather's last name is Bassi and my grandmother's last name is Ludivici. They were Filipino Italians from Solono, Nueva Viscaya, in the northern Philippines.

I am requesting help in tracing back my family history to Italy. I have done some initial searches under both names. There are many Bassi families, but nothing shows up under the name Ludivici.

Any assistance or direction is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and aloha.

No Ludivici is currently shown in the surname distribution thruout Italy at www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi while www.familysearch.org reflects Ludivici historically in Wales, France and Germany from 1648 to1722. Try different spellings in both websites to satisfy your research objectives.

LODOVICI, however is listed inthe Italian surname dictionary stemming from Lodovico or Ludovico. These spellings such as Lodovichi,Lodovisi, Ludovici and Ludovisi are variuants of the base surname LUDOVICI. There is one alteration Lodovichetti all located primarilyin the Toscana, Emilia Romagna and Le Marche regions of northern Italy. Their roots stem from ancient France HLUODOWIG and latinized as indicated above. =Peter=

First of all, you guys are amazing! Thank you both for your quick replies.

OK, I think we're on to something here. I just checked with my mother and apparently the Philippine government weren't into spell checks back in the days. With that aside, I verified that the two mentioned in bold letters are my great grand parents:

Feliciano Bassi and Maria Ludivaisi

My mother thinks that between the two registered listings of my Great Grandmother's last name that "Ludivaisi" looks to be something she's familiar with.

This seems to be an almost impossible feat to figure out part of my Italian lineage considering the variations in spelling. It's a good thing that my Grandfather's surname "Bassi" is pretty consistent in spelling.

With "Bassi" in mind I will attempt to find a link back to Italy from my Great Grandfather Feliciano Bassi.

Again, thank you two for your help thus far and any more tips are always welcomed. Aloha.

If you live near a Family History Center, they have some records for Philippines, Nueva Vizcaya, Solano
on microfilm that you can order and view at the center (abt $6.00 mo rent).
Perhaps a birth record will have the parent's birth location...
