Trying to locate my Italian roots

Postby aeonflux18 » 07 Jan 2010, 15:20

Hello out there,
I am trying to apply for Italian citizenship through my mother's paternal side but am having difficult with finding the proper documentation for my ancestors (birth, marriage, death certificates). If anybody could help I would be so grateful and if you like a challenge in genealogy this is it! Here is my family's story as I know it. My mother's maiden name is Mary Devincenzi born 1951 in Los Angeles CA to Peter Devincenzi and Jeanne (Simms born 1926). Peter Devincenzi was born in 1924 to Sebastian David Devincenzi (died 1971 and served in both WWI and WWII) and Louise (Tommasino born 1902). Here is where is gets tricky. My great-grandpa Sebastian was born on the boat from Italy on June 3 1893 when it arrived in New York Harbor. I was told this by my grandpa Peter who was told by his mother Louis. Apparently, Sebastian's parents were a Maddalena (maiden name unknown but born in 1869/1870) and Louis Devincenzi. Sebastian also had a sister Jennie( b 1897) and Mary (b 1895). They all lived in San Francisco CA. I can find all of these people (except Louis) in the federal census starting from the 1900. There are plenty of errors in the census too (dates, names, birth locations). Maddalena remarried a Vincent Savarese around 1898 (he died in 1916) and had two more children (Vincent and Louis) with him. Here is the icing on the cake, in 1906 there was the great San Francisco earthquake which caused fires and burned all municipal records in the SF area. That means no birth, death, or marriage certificates (wonderful). I checked ship manifests for June 3 1893 and found a ship called Neustria that docked in NY harbor that day. There was a woman on board named Maddalena Chiod (incorrectly recorded in the ancestry database as surname Grazia Di Felin) born 1869/1870 from Gallo Italy with a son, whose age was too young to be recorded, named Ercole Ansalone (incorrectly recorded as Arfalove). Could this be my Maddalena and great-grandpa Sebastian whose name was changed later? If so where does the name Ansalone come from and where is Louis Devincenzi? If Sebastian was not born on the boat then possibly I could find a Louis and Maddelena Devincenzi immigrating from Italy. I was able to find a Luigi and Maddalena (incorrectly recorded as Magdelena) (b 1870) De Vincenzi immigrating from Le Havre through NY with final destination SF on December 11 1892 but there origin from Italy was not recorded. As far as locations where my family might be from, I was always told when I was younger some of my family came form Genoa. I am having so much trouble with this as most of my ancestors have had numerous names, aliases, and marriages. Please help! Thank you Andrea Jochim (b 1980 to Ben Jochim and Mary (Devincenzi) Jochim)

Thanks for the replies so far,
Valerie: Jennie married a Walter Paladini so it's not the Jennie listed above. But I did find Jennie and Sebastian's SSN and I just ordered the applications. It takes 20 days. It will be interesting if Maddalena's Maiden name is on the applications...she is somewhat of a ghost besides the 1900 and 1910 federal census.

They all lived in San Francisco CA. I can find all of these people (except Louis) in the federal census starting from the 1900

If the family settled for first in San Francisco...
Possible article for Louis's death? (The San Francisco Call - Sunday, February 20, 1898)

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/ ... -1/seq-30/

Killed by a fall.
Luigi De Vincenzi who resided at 7 Hinckley Place, died at St. Lukes's Hospital yesterday from the effects of a fall while engaged on a new building at Stockton and Lombard Streets, on the 16th inst.

Laura,
This could be a great lead! I know Maddalena remarried to Vincent Savarese in 1898 and her last child with Louis/Luigi was born Dec 31 1897. Thank you so much!

LAURA YOU ARE AMAZING! I just cross-checked the federal census of 1910 where she does appear and the census was taken April 29th 1910 so this means this death record could definitely be her!

:D I'm happy I was able to help you....

I saw the 1910 census shows the Savarese family living in San Francisco ... what do you think about Maddalena's death in the Fresno county? Is it possible for you to ask for her death certificate? It may have listed her maiden name and place of origin (even if I'm pretty sure she was coming from Varese Ligure area  )...
