Sammarco (San Marco) from Naples

Postby anthonysammarco » 01 Feb 2010, 18:43

My family is Sammarco (San Marco) is said to be from Naples.
My grandfather was Luigi Sammarco (San Marco) born in 1895
and son of Antonio Sammarco (San Marco.) His brothers were
Carlo and Giovanni. He married Rose (Rosa) Giannelli from
Avellino (Montefalcione.)

Would anyone have any information?

Actually, "Sammarco" is a common name in modern Italy (see this map) whereas San Marco is very rare.

What part of the US did they settle in?

As you can see from the map I linked to in my previous message, there are an enormous number of Sammarco's in and around Naples. Also, there is the city of Naples and there is the province of Naples, which encompasses 92 large and small cities.

Where did your family settle when coming to the US? If we can find a ship's manifest, we may be able to learn more about exactly where they came from. With that info, you can then request birth & marriage certificates from Italy.

Yes, Antonetta and Maria (her daughter) both died in 1915.

My grandmother was Rose Giannelli Sammarco
daughter of Lucia and Domenic Giannelli of Avellino

I am so excited to tell you that I am related to you! My Great Grandfather is Antonio Sammarco...his Daughter Teresa Sammarco Pilcher is shown in that 1930 census with my Father Stephen, and Uncle's Hank, Billy and Edward. They are all dead now but it is still thrilling to get this information. I will share more if you are interested. It is quite a story from here!

Antonetta would have been my Great Grandmother as my Grandmother is Teresa Sammarco Pilcher...child of Antonio and Antonetta Sammarco. Do you know how Antonetta died? was it in childbirth with Maria? Infleunza?

Thank you for the reply. I knew of the Pilchers, though I cannot remember that they visited with my grandparents when I was a child.
Our great grandmother and her daughter Maria both died in 1915 of influenza and were buried in Malden, Massachusetts (the lot remains unmarked.)
Our great grandfather died in 1945 and was bried in the same lot, but what had surprised me was that in 1915 the internments were for San Marco, but in 1945 it was Sammarco. There was a family lore that it was changed in the 1920's.
