Laitano, location/city?

Postby jtoralva » 05 Feb 2010, 02:22

Hi everyone, I'm trying to find information on my ancestors. I am trying to gather documents, but don't know where to look, as I don't know what municipality they're from. What I do know for certain is that they're from Calabria.

My GGGGF name is Francisco Laitano, he immigrated to Uruguay, his death record from over there gives minimal information, His parents were Leonardo Laitano and Fortunata Severino. I estimate he was born around 1865-1866. He died in 1933, in Florida, Uruguay.

It is rumored that his son was also from Italy, however I have an Uruguayan birth certificate, I have been told that it may be a fake. His Name was Lucas Miguel Laitano (1904-1983)

Please help!! Thanks in advance :D

Hi and welcome to the forum,

You are very lucky, because the name Laitano is very rare and appears in only 4 towns in Calabria.

33.96 Morano Calabro
13.45 Frascineto
9.06 Castrovillari
2.64 Cassano allo Ionio

The name Severino also appears in Morano Calabro I think that is your best choice.

Wow, that's a lot of G's. My grandfather (one "g") was born in 1886; you managed to pack three more G's in only 20 years.

Does anybody know where I could look for his marriage records? His wife, btw, is Clara Bia, but I can't find that name anywhere. I have searched and can't find anything on her or any marriage documentation.

If Fransesco was married in Italy, his records woud be in the comune. Bia is a name that appears in Italy. Why don't you send for his birth certificate and marriage certificate. That will give you some clues.
