Rezza/Roefaro families from Frosinone

Postby theaisforannie » 08 Feb 2010, 05:20

Hello all,

I am looking for information on my great grandparents, Benedetto Rezza (b. 1876) and Elisabetta Roefaro (b. 1883), who emigrated from Pontecorvo in Frosinone in 1907. They lived in Brooklyn and had nine children, of whom seven survived (including my beloved grandfather).

I have discovered quite a bit more about them than I ever expected through ancestry.com (census records, ships manifests, and WWI draft registration), but I want information about their lives and families in Italy, and it's a roadblock.

Elisabetta had a brother named Joseph Roefaro who lived with them (according to the 1920 census) in Brooklyn at least for a while. Benedetto had a brother Salvatore -- he is on their ship's manifest as the relative already in the U.S. The manifest also lists Pontecorvo as their most recent residence, which I assume is true -- my grandfather always just told us they were from Frosinone and was never more specific. Also, according to family lore, they were cousins.

I read on Wikipedia that Pontecorvo was destroyed in WWII and rebuilt afterward. It kind of destroys the fantasy of being able to walk the same streets that they did.

Anyway, if any of you have information or can point me in the right direction, I would eternally grateful! Thank you!

Annie

Forgive a possibly stupid question. How do I access this record? Do I have to travel all the way to Utah, or is it available online somehow?

Thanks!

Records for Pontecvorvo from 1862 to 1900 can be viewed on microfilm rented fromn the nearest (www.familysearch.org) library closest to your home for about $5.00.

Take along a companion book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson which is a valuable assist which can be borrowed from yhou rlibrary of Bookstore. =Peter=

There are several years missing of the civil records on film but you could be lucky. The town has no civil records before 1886. Parish records exist but are also missing years.

No Peter, if you look carefully at the available films you will see that several years are missing. The State archive has the records from 1862 but the town does not. Actually since Pontecorvo was part of the PAPAL States it is amazing that there are any records prior to 1870.
