Austrian or Italian

Postby familyfromtheboot » 08 Feb 2010, 16:49

There is some controversy as to whether my father's grandparents were Austrian or Italian. Half of the family says they are Italian and the other half says they are Austrian. My great grandparents' names were Battista Stonfer and Katerina Corona. Stonfer does not sound Italian to me, but Corona does.
I cannot find any immigration, naturalization, or birth certificates for either of them. I do know that Battista had a brother names Jno (John) Stonfer who immigrated to Newell, Fayette County, PA in 1902. I have found his naturalization papers and it states he is from Mezanno, Austria/Italy. My great grandparent also came to Newell, but I cannot find them in census papers. I am confused.

The area now known as Trentino (which includes Mezzano (two z's, one n) was under Austrian rule until 1919 when it was annexed to Italy in the aftermath of WWI.

This Wikipedia article might be a research starting point.

Most of my family came from Italy. But the rest are from Austria. Its very taxing to find documents on the Austrian side back in that country. The borders and countries have changed over and over when the Austrian-Hungary empire was over. Then add to that the world wars and many of those towns were leveled with all their documentation. I managed to find a little through manifests showing relatives going back to their home town to visit and found a ship manifest for someone coming over. But thats it.
Im also going to just add that many, many germans settled in pennsylvania. Ever hear people say "im pennsylavania dutch" ? They arent dutch, they are german.

Church records (birth, death , marriage) for Mezzano have been microfilmed and are available through the LDS Family History Library -- some local public libraries can also get some of the films on loan for you. Film #s 1329643 and 1329644 have records from 1624 to 1923.

I cannot thank this genealogy community enough for their help. My great grand parents spoke very broken English and that is probably why their name is continuously spelled wrong. I tried different spellings, but not the ones above. I cannot wait to tell my father that his family does exist. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I have the naturalization records from Baptista John Stonfer's brother Jno Stonfer, but I have yet to find Baptista's (John).

Baptista's (John) brother, Jno immigrated the same year as he did. His brother's naturalization papers state the he departed from Le Havre, France on November 8th or 9th, 1902 and arrived in New York on November 22nd, 1902. The ship was listed as Britanica.

Jno declared his intent to become a citizen in Uniontown, Fayette County,PA on March 4th, 1920. Maybe they immigrated and applied for naturalization together??
