DeCaro

Postby don14gar21 » 11 Mar 2010, 17:45

I am new to the site and would like to say hi to everyone. I would appreciate any help.

I am looking for parents of Giovanni DeCaro born in Bracigliano, Italy on 18 Aug 1886. He married Clorinda Pennino daughter of Francesco Pennino 18 Aug 1920. He came to the USA in 1904

Welcome to the forum! :)

Do either of these sound like a possibility for your Giovanni?

Keeping in mind that many immigrants traveled back and forth from Italy, a manifest from 1906 lists a
Giovanni DeCaro, 18, from Bracigliano, Italy;
traveling with Ferdinando DeCaro and headed to Springfield, MA.; to Ferdinando's brother Vincenzo.

OR

a 1910 manifest lists
Giovanni DeCaro, 23, farm laborer, from Bracigliano, Italy;
Leaves wife Carmela in Bracigliano;
Going to his sister Filomena in Springfield, MA

If either sounds like it might be him, I'll post the manifest for you.

Since you know your ancestor's comune of birth, you might want to write to the comune and request his birth record (Atto di Nascita) to find out his parents' names. This web site http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html has form letters in Italian and directions on how to make your request.

Added...I also found the 1904 manifest, but I thought you might already have it. If not, I'll post it for you.
T.

Thank you for the reply but I do not think that is him. According to what I have written from his son, Giovanni came over when he was 18.

Giovanni De Caro's mother's first name was Grazia....

Here is the 1920 arrival manifest for Giovanni with his wife Clorinda:

page 2:

He stated he was in the U.S from 1904 to 1919 (Springfield MA)

You're welcome Gary! :D

I believe Giovanni's father died soon because in the WW1 Draft registration Card (June 1917) Giovanni stated he was supporting his mother (no mention about his father):

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

Again, thank you Laura. How were you able to get that manifest from Ellis Island? I searched but could not get the one you did which states he went to Springfield to stay with cousin Vincenzo.

:D I usually use this site to search manifests on Ellis Island website:

http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html

in this case name: Giovanni last name: DE and town name: Bracigliano....
only 12 records, the last one was the correct one....
