DeVita Family Research

Postby fieroguy » 13 Mar 2010, 18:37

We are looking for information on Vindson James "Jimmy" Devita. He was born 4/22/1889 in Sicily. He was killed in a shooting during a robbery in Beloit, Wisconsin on August 4, 1934. According to the local paper he had lived in Beloit for 26 years, but for reasons unknown to us, he was transported to Illinois and buried in St. Josephs Cemetery on August 7, 1934. We have to believe that he had family there or had family buried there. We are hoping to find an obituary, burial record and/or information that might lead to his parents. We can find DeVita's in census records in Chicago but have not been able to trace the families to Beloit or back.
It there some one that can help us proceed?
Thanks

Your request to find Vincenzo De Vita's parents names, thanks to Biffs efforts can now be ascertained by going to this website
www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/it ... tters.html and send the form letter to the Uffico di Stato Civile in Marsala at the address shown under MUNICIPIO at www.tuttitalia.it/sicilia/22-marsala
You can request his ESTRATTO DI NASCITA=long form for parents names onhis birth record.

Here's a best guess for a 1930 census. I know the age is off and the first name but what intrigued me was the occupation, proprietor, soft drink parlor since in an abbreviated obituary from a Chicago paper, it stated he owned a saloon. Perhaps he converted the soft drink parlor to a saloon in 1933 after the repeal of prohibition. See line 16 on the census.

Thanks for the super quick responses. We know that there were a couple
of Devita families in Beloit. The one that we are trying to find was known as James or"Jimmy" but his death record says Vindson, possibly a mis-spelling of Vincent or Vincenzo? You are right, the dates are not quite correct, but we have found several errors in census records. You mentioned an obituary, what paper was it in? We have one from the Chicago Tribune dated Sunday Aug. 5 1934, is that the one you refered to? If you read the account in the Beloit paper and the one from the Tribune, you would swear they are not describing the same shooting.
We are trying to tie this Devita to Joseph DeVita who was a barber in Beloit in the 30's and 40's. Both worked at Fairbanks in Beloit in 1910. We can't verify is they were brothers, but presume that at the least they were cousins. Our findings show that that both were in Chicago for 3 years before coming to Beloit. Jimmy's wife and son moved back to Chicago after his death. She remarried as is Pauline Ingolia the sons name was Frank. We believe that there was still family there, and if we can find them it would make the connection we are looking for.
Where did you find the ships manifest? Is there a data base someplace? We are also looking into Severio Genovese and his brother Vito, also from Sicily.
Thanks

We are indeed interested in finding the parents, just not sure where to look. We had thought that we could get to them by tracking the family back thru Chicago. Not sure about the names to use to contact the folks that you suggested. Any other information or suggestions that can lead us to them is greatly appreciated.

Vincenzo De Vita was born in Sicily in 1888 in Marsala so when you use the formletter in Italian all you have to do is ask for Vincenzo;s birth record which will have his parents names

Further if you read the form letter website you can also ask for the certificato di stato di famiglia storico which will be in Vincenzo's father's name =Peter=
