Speranza-Mineo

Postby RosinaMaria » 14 Mar 2010, 18:40

Looking for any information or how to obtain any information on my grandmother's genealogy. She was born in 1898 and adopted by a family with the surname Speranza in Mineo. Her name was Rosina Gulianna and she had one sister Josephine. Would this be enough information to track down her birth records? Thank you.

Hi Rosina and welcome to the forum,

Did your grandmother immigrate to the US? I am a little confused. Was Speranza your grandmother's last name or is it Gulianna?

I don't blame you for being confused. So are me and my sister. Because of my grandmother's "adoption" things are not clear. I was told that she was given the last name of Speranza. Although, she always called herself Rosina Gulianna. Maybe Guilianna was a middle name? Maybe, it was her biological mother's? I was hoping that I could find a way to obtain her records. She immigrated to New York in 1921.

Last name might be Giuliano. Where did she settle when she came to the States? Could she have come as a child? What was her husband's name? Did they marry in the US or Italy?

Do you believe this girl could have been her sister Josephine??

Agrippina Speranza, age 23, married (even if she was joining her fiancè Speranza Santo, so possible she was single), from Mineo (leaving in Mineo her father Speranza Agrippino), going to Boston MA. Place of birth Mineo
I noticed there were not so much Speranza coming from Mineo....

Thank you!! We believe so. This is both interesting and exciting. However, we know that both my grandmother Rosina and her sister Josephine came over together and we suspect that there may be an error on page 1 line 5 as it references Agrippina but not Rosina. However, on page 2 lines 5 & 6 two separate references to Speranza are made.

Again, thank you. Are you familiar with Mineo?

The page 2 reference says both women ( Agrippina and Tullia)were going to meet their fiancees Santo and Salvatore Speranza in Boston.

It was not unusual for cousins to marry. However, it is unlikely that Rosina name was simply omitted from the manifest.

Interesting. I never heard of a Tullia before. I believe that my grandmother was adopted into the Speranza family. I have no idea what her birth name was. i just discovered that the name "Carvalho" was written "somewhere" on her passport.

Perhaps we can trace back a little. What was your grandmother's married name? Her husband's? Where did they live? How about Josephine, do you have any information on her?

Unfortunately most of my relatives are now deceased. Due to the fact that my grandmother Rosina was adopted the only name I have for her is Speranza. She was adopted into the Speranza family and married a cousin Salvatore Speranza. Since she was adopted into the family she was not related to him. I know that Rosina and Agrippina traveled on the same ship in April 1921. But, when looking at the ships list of passengers her name Rosina's name is not there. Yet, on the manifest lines 5 & 6 mention the name Speranza. I will have to try to locate someone in the family to give me further info. Very confusing for sure. Thanks for responding...:)

edit to add:

If this military enliostment for the second World War is correct for Salvatore Speranza, then he stated his nearest relative was Julia Speranza, maybe her correct name was Rosa Giulia/Giuliana Speranza??

Oh my God! Yes, these are regarding my family. I now realize that my grandmother's birth name must have been Julia Carnavale. My grandmother seemed to think that her birth mother was in the entertainment field.

Thanks so much for all of this. Obviously, I have to join Ancestory.com. I can't thank you enough. :D

Absolutely! this is too funny, because my aunt traveled to Mineo and could not find any information on the Speranza family. Now my dad has me working on is side! Mama Mia! Thankfully, there are no known adoptions on his side. THANKS!
