DeAngelis from Sorrento, Italy

Postby jorog » 20 Mar 2010, 04:46

I am trying to find information about my great-grandfather. His name is Francesco DeAngelis, married to Mary. They immigrated to the United States around 1880. Their first child Gabriel Francis was born in Sorrento on 9-8-1879. The rest of their children were born in New York City. Francesco was born around 1853. I don't know Mary's maiden name. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may ask for a copy of the Application for the Social security number of one of her children, because on it you can find their mother's maiden name:

from :

http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_re ... equest.htm

The SS-5, or Application for Social Security Number is a great resource for learning more about individuals who died after about 1960, and generally includes the following:

•Full name
•Full name at birth, including maiden name
•Present mailing address
•Age at last birthday
•Date of birth
•Place of birth (city, county, State)
•Father's full name
•Mother's full name, including maiden name
•Sex
•Race as indicated by the applicant
•Whether the applicant ever applied for Social Security or Railroad Retirement before
•Current employer's name and address
•Date signed
•Applicant's signature

just for example, on Gabriel's application there must be his mother's maiden name....

Social Security Death Index

Welcome :-)

Since you know the comune/town of your GGF birth you can write to the comune and request his birth record (atto di nascita). This link will provide a good resource
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... ello2.html

~OR~

You can search the Italian records on microfilm at your local Family History Center run by the Mormons.
familysearch.org (scroll down to locate nearest center)
Then visit the center to request the records be sent there (you can only view them at the center). Rental is about $5.50 per month. You can view birth, marriage, death records, etc.
