Joseph and Maria Masone

Postby vramos11 » 20 Mar 2010, 16:53

Joe Masone was born it Italy in 1865. He emigrated, presumably with wife Mary and three children in 1890. They had seven children listed in the 1900 census. Joe was a barber. Joe and Maria married in Italy in 1887. Joe and Maria eventually had ten children, my Grandmother Edith Ida being one of them. They are rumored to be from Naples.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

A big Thank You! goes to pink67, who is a research God. She helped immensely with my Grandfather's family, Bonavita.

do you know which was Joseph's first son Nelson's real first (italian) name? maybe tracking down his record can be helpful to determine his place of birth...
The early arrival manifests (before 1890/1900) do indicate only the country of origin, not the exact town....

Or, this could be the death date for Joseph:

Masone Joseph 66 y Jun 29 1933
Certificate number: 13939 Kings

the death certificate may have listed Joseph's birth town.... :!:

Thank you so much, Laura! I was wondering wherre that 1910 census got off to. 'Masal' would explain it.

Nelson has no Italian variant that I know of. Nelson is a variant of Neal, Nigel or Niles, all English, or should I say Anglo-Saxon.

I'm lucky in that my mother can name all ten siblings and most of whom they married. My mother's family lost touch with them because she was the only on to move 'away' to NJ: They stayed in NY, settling I think in Bensonhurst or Long Island or both.

And I do have the 1900 census with them on Evergreen St. They moved before the 1910 and stayed past the 1920 census on 86th St.

I've seen some records of steamship arrivals and no, they leave out town of origination. It woulod have been nice to know.

I still can't get over that you found my Great Grandmother's maiden name, Abate. That meant a lot to me. Thanks!

Well, are the names fitting togheter with the censuses?

Don't forget that on 1910 census Joseph's wife Mary stated she had 11 children and one was dead....
Maybe he was Nelson?
I know Nelson doesn't have an italian version.... Maybe I'm hazard a guess but found this death record on the Italgen.org site:

Masone Rosario 20 y Feb 22 1906
Certificate number: 3955 Kings

approx. birth year 1886, same of Nelson....

Maybe this boy was Nelson?

I advise you to ask for the death certificate of Joseph and Rosario, it may have listed their place of birth....

Daughter Lena on 1900 census was born in Italy too, do you believe this marriage dates could have been hers?

Masone Lena Jan 5 1911 Certificate number: 388 Kings
Vinciguerra Antonio Jan 5 1911 Certificate number: 388 Kings

Oh... yes.... She was Joseph's daughter.... if you look the second page of the 1920 census you'll see she was living with her husband Anthony and child Eleonor, Edmund and Grace just next door to his father's family!!!! :D

Nelson survived because my mother remembers him. The eleventh probably died in childhood.

Could Rosario be the proverbial fifth Beatle? Child 11?

I hav no idea about the marriage certs but will ask my mother. Chances are she'll not know as she was born in '39.

Living next door. That happened so often. My Aunt and family lived next door to Grandmother in the 60'-90's.

Thanks again for an amazing job!!
