Bitetto

Postby Ceragioli » 05 Apr 2010, 19:24

I'm trying to trace my genealogy beyond my Mother's father. My Grandfather was Nick Bitetto of the Bronx. I've been told that my Mother's side was from Bari but that's where it stops. My Mother died in 1983 and was from a family of 5 children. I believe my Grandmother was named Margaret but not sure. I know Margaret was my Mother's middle name. Anyway, I can't find any information about my relatives beyond my Grandfather Nick. I did find that a Nicolo Bitetto arrived at Ellis Island in the early 1900's but from what I heard my Grandfather was a second generation Italian. I would also like to trace my Grandmother as well if possible. Thanks for all help.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
We may be able to place your family on a census in the Bronx.
To be sure we have the correct Nick Bitetto, could you list his children & their approx birth dates? The ones born before 1930 should be on a census with their parents
Thanks!
Valarie

Nicola Bitetto came from Palo Del Colle (see www.ellisisland.org website)
in the province of Bari.

Go to www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/it ... tters.html for form letters in Italian whichyou can send to PALO DEL COLLE at their Vital statistics office UFFICIO DI STATO CIVILE for his ESTRATTO DI NASCITA (long form containg his parents names) which is free of charge.

Go to www.tuttitalia.it/puglia/30-palo-del-colle and scroll down to MUNICVIPIO for the address. =Peter=

I did find Nicola but am unsure if he's was my relative. Probably in some way since most of the Bitettos originated from Palo Del Colle, Bari. Thanks Peter for you input. It's funny since my first cousin on my Father's side is named Nicola.

This may be his Petition for Naturalization
A son William instead of Ludwig
But I think your mother's birth date is correct
Lots of great information

Ok, I also see that the name is spelled Bitteto instead of Bitetto. This may help.

1930 Census...looks like the whole family
there are 2 Franks here...one (2 yrs. old) is son of Nick and the other (4 months old) is son of William. All living with Grandfather Frank and Grandmother Rose.

The names are often transcribed incorrectly
He signed his petition for naturalization 'Bitetto'

You, too, Valarie!!! :-)

Now you have the maiden name of the grandmother Rosa...Di Bari!!!!

Interesting to see that William was actually Sebastiano, and James is Vincenzo... I was searching for Guglielmo for William...

Galiardi
Based on the parent's first names matching Nicola's and Grace's children's names, this may be Grace's family in 1930

&There has been a strong custom in Italy that determines how children are named:

The first male is named after his paternal grandfather.
The second male is named after his maternal grandfather.
The first female is named after her paternal grandmother.
The second female is named after her maternal grandmother.

possibly another record transcribed incorrectly:

Name Marriage Date Marriage Certificate Number County
Gagliardi Lodovico Mar 28 1904 5406 (1904) Manhattan
