line crossed out on passenger list

Postby dmh520 » 15 Apr 2010, 13:14

Hi Can someone help me? I am trying to figure out if this person sailed or not
almost all the information is filled out on the psg manifest except final destination, passage paid by, etc for lines 11- 16. There aren't any notations about him not sailing or being held upon arrival so I am not sure if he sailed or not?
On ancestry the passenger list comes up under Francesco Magnareller vessel the Lahn sailed apr24 arrived May 6 1902 into New York line #9
On Ellis Island it comes up under Francesco Magnarella which should be the correct name born about 1865 - i think this is my gg grandfather- but nobody remembers him ever coming to the US - so not sure if he ever sailed or not? my father and aunt don't know very much family history so he could have come to NY and they just didn't know about it

Entries with a line through them mean that, for one reason or another, the person did not sail. Illness and/or arriving at the port after the ship sailed are two common reasons.

Oftentimes you can find another manifest days or weeks later for the same person.

Carmine, I have a similar question. I have two relatives whose names are crossed off a passenger list, name, age filled out, town of orgin filled out, and in the last column it says their health was good. So it would seem they did not miss their boat or detained for health reasons. On the detained page, I see one name that could be my great aunt's name, but it is mispelled, but not my grandfather's name (he was 6, she was 14). The detained reason says husb (and), she stayed for one day and there is a name and address of someone I dont know that she was release to. I do not recognize that name at all. Now it gets interesting, 2 weeks later I see their names on another boat, this time it appears they were not crossed off. any thoughts? thanks much :D

I think the name on the detained page is another person, not your aunt.

People were detained for several reasons - one of the big ones being a female or child traveling alone. It was necessary for them to prove that they would not become a burden to society, typically by being picked up and signed for by a husband/father/relative already in the US.

For whatever reason, your relatives reserved space on that ship but did not sail; hence, their names were crossed out. As you found, they sailed on another ship two weeks later.

From this site...

Note well that some of those names "lined out" were on board, but are officially recorded on another page of the passenger list. The example below includes two crossed-off names because they were "Not on Board," but one name is lined-out (line 21) because he/she is a "2nd class passenger." The official record of that person is, then, on the list of second class passengers.

OK, so I am crossed eyed now from reading all the names on the ships manifest. Carmine, you are right, the name on the detained page is not my great aunts. I came across the detainees name again on a prior page.

My relatives names were only listed once on the document and crossed out. I guess I have to conclude they never made it on board, and came over two weeks later.
I had been assuming their names would recorded when they boarded but i guess the manifest list was also a reservation list and was created before the actual day they shipped.

The family tree guide to finding your Ellis Island ancestors
By Sharon DeBartolo Carmack

p. 20 "Immigration passenger lists were printed in the U.S. but completed at the port of departure (1891-1954), then filed in America after the ship docked.

I should have mentioned...

I don't have a detainee list in front of me right now, but there are two columns just to the right of the name which indicate the page and line number where the person can be found in the passenger list. The page number or (often) letter/number group can be difficult to locate as they are often microfilmed in reverse order and also often separated into groups of pages for each of the embarkation ports the ship stopped at (larger ships often picked up passengers at two or more ports before beginning the Atlantic crossing).

OK, Carmine, thanks, I have other relatives to look up so it is good to know I can cross reference the detainee list with the earlier pages if I come across this again. My eyes have gone back to normal today :-D

And thanks to the other folks for the varies links. I will check them out.
