Maria Teresa Laraia

Postby chrisdamato » 17 Apr 2010, 19:39

I just received my great great grandmother's death certificate from NYC. I now have her parents names. If anyone could please assist me, I would appreciate it.

Maria Teresa was born in Laurenzana, Italy on 11/27/1849. Her father's name is Saverio Laraia and mother is Anna Lausone. Ancestry doesn't come up with anything for either of them. Neither does FamilySearch.org.

Please help.

I have a feeling the surname Laraia is supposed to be Lauria which does exist in that town.

Possibly the other surname is Sansone and the first letter is not an L.

I see a lot of people with the Laraia surname on stevemorse.org when doing an L search for the town of Laurenzana on the gold form for passenger lists.

What is incorrectly transcribed as Lausone on the passenger list is definitely the surname Sansone.

Laraia could be the the surname spelled as La Raia. No one in the current phone book for the town with that surname though. The closest location is in Pietrapertosa, also in Potenza province.

It could be Sansone. I'm comparing the L in Laraia to the L in Lausone and they look similar. Unfortunately, there are only two handwritten capital L's to compare. Her ship manifest listed her as La Raia, but death cert lists Laraia.

The n's in Anna look very similar to the u in Lausone. It's always difficult when written in script.

Maestra36,

Which manifest are you looking at that you are referring to when you mention the incorrect transcription?

Maria Teresa was married to Vincenzo Pellettieri. She was born in 1849, so the person arriving in 1905 could not have been her.

I was looking at the manifest that T got for you for Dec of 1905. Even though the name is listed on the passenger card as Lausone, if you look at the actual manifest, the surname is clearly Sansone, at least to me it is. Also I would search the people with the Sansone surname who came from that town and you may find some related to your ancestors.

The December 1905 manifest that T provided doesn't have anyone listed with the name Lausone on it. Not sure if I'm looking at the wrong page or not. I see Maria Laraia, but nobody by the name of Lausone.
