Massaro Family in Castiglione di Carovilli

Postby AnnetteMassaro442 » 18 May 2010, 01:28

I am looking for anyone who can offer me info about my grandfather. His name was Vincenzo Massaro born in Castiglione Molise Italy on January 21, 1886. How can I get a copy of his birth certificate or any documents of his birth? He had a brother who died by suicide when he was young before the age of 16 and also he had a sister who stayed in Italy. My grandfather came to the USA when he was only 16. Who were his parents and what was his back ground for education. Does he still have family that still may be there.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

a number of Vincenzo Massaros came to the US. Can you give us a little more info? Do you have an approximate year of immigration? Did he come alone? Where did he go when he got here.?

He came to the US in 1902. He came here alone and went to Krebs Oklahoma to work at a coal mine. He was married in Krebs I believe and then moved to Akron Ohio to work at Firestone Rubber Company.

You can either go to the nearest Mormon church familyhistory library (www.familysearch.org ) for civil records for Castiglione di Carovilli which is part of the town of SPOLTORE (prov. Pescara, Abruzzo).

OR go to this website, follow directions and your on your way and its free of charge for most documents. Its all provided for you so there is no problem but if you have any questions get back to us. Mail to the MUNICIPIO Ufficio di Stato Civile and wait 6-8 weeks. www.tuttitalia.it/abruzzo/75-spoltore

For references, some records from the site Ancestry.com and Ellisisland.org:

possible 1902 arrival manifest:

May 1902 (names are crossed out, they didn't travel)

Carmina Massaro, age 25, married travelling with her son Vincenzo Massaro age 16, from Carovilli (Castiglione is an hamlet of Carovilli) to NY to join her husband Domenico Massaro:
Please note that a few lines below there is listed a Nicolantonio Massaro who was joining his brother Domenico...

June 1902:

possible 1901 arrival manifest for Vincenzo's father Domenico?

Maybe Vincenzo "americanized" his first name from Vincenzo to Stephen?

Hi Laura,

Saw those manifests, but I got confused because of the differences in age.

They cancelled their trip twice, but I couldn't find another sailing.

ciao Misbris :D

I believe this is the correct manifest:

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0015

even if Vincenzo's age is wrong... I believe she was the same Carmina and he was the same Vincenzo on the previous arrival manifest (may 1902)...

Laura

p.s. Misbris I just noticed Carmina was "only" 25 years old.... Maybe Vincenzo was a step.son?

Ok my grandfather Vincenzo came to the US at the age of 16 without parents. I know this for sure!..it's possible Carmina was his cousin saying he was her son because he was a minor....or did that matter back then?

Hi, by this record:
U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942
about Steve Massaro
Name: Steve Massaro
Birth Date: 21 Jan 1886
Birth Place: Costigliono

Residence: Summit, Ohio
Race: White
Roll: WWII_2251631

working at Firestone Rubber Company;
so it is the correct record of your ancestor;
the problem abt Vincenzo first name and this record where the first name is Stefano ( =Steve), it leaves some perplexity...

it are a ship's manifest of a Stefano Massaro coming from Carovilli, travelling alone in Sep 07, 1904, age 18
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0015

you sure that Vincenzo was the italian first name of your ancestor?

I agree with Suanj, both the Draft registration cards for the first and second world wars are correct but for Steve Massaro (same birth date)
I found also a 1930 census for him living in Akron Ohio with his wife Sabina:

Madaline Massaro 17
Fannie Massaro 15
Amelia Massaro 11
Nickie Massaro 9

is this Steve Massaro the Vincenzo you're searching for?

I am a little confused here..CASTIGLIONE DI CARAVILLI is part of SPOLTORE not Caravilli since CARAVILLI has no frazione and there is no CASTIGIONE DI CARAVILLI as a Comune?? =Peter=

Thank you to everyone...Stefano is my grandfathers name...here in the US. I would like to research father back into his past in Italy...not sure there if his name was Stefano or Vincenzo he used there....but I see now and confirmed it with a cousin that Stefano Massaro was my grandfather.
