Postby hollynwillis » 26 May 2010, 03:43

Does anybody have any connection to these last names? Or does anybody know of anybody? I'm trying to research our family in Italy and cannot find any specifics. Please help! Thanks

Hi Holly and welcome to this forum. Is there any other information you can give us concerning your ancestry-first names, approximate years of birth, where your ancestors resided in the U.S., if they did. Do you know the town in Italy where they were from? The key to finding information about your family in Italy is finding information about them on U.S. records first. So, if you could give us some specifics, either I or someone else on this forum may be able to point you in the right direction.

Holly you put e at the end of the MosellE name and most likely pronounced it Moselli which is the correct spelling for the surname in Italy. If you go to www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi put in Moselli for the 27 cities, towns or villages where people with that surname reside in Italy. =Peter=

I agree with you. Peter. I think the spelling should be Moselli, but I do see Italians with just the Moselle surname in the Ellis Island records by searching them from the stevemorse. org website

I found that some Moselle, italian emigrated in USA, really the italian surname spelling was Maselli; if you can say us the name of your ancestor and some other detail, maybe we can help better, regards,

Thanks to everyone, his name was Andrew he was born in 1843 0r 44. he lived in illinois, was natraulized there, and also live in montana. I have seen so many variations of our name from mosel to moselle so it is very confusing. today my grandfather is mosell. The big mystery is where in italy we are from that is the information that we are desperately searching for.

yes this is the problem I am having, his name is constantly spelled different on every census. I have looked at them and about half of the info is correct. his wife's name was huldah allen, he had 3 sons edward, amos, and andrew "andy". He was born in italy for sure just not sure of exactly where, his parents were also born in italy, then names listed as stefn, and nellie are correct as well

I believe, from little infos abt Andrea, that maybe he was born in north east Italy, but where? that is the problem...

in this case the surname could be for
Friuli Venezia Giulia region:
-Moselli that is a surname of Trieste...
-as a well MOSELE that is a surname of Cividale del Friuli, Udine and Sandrigo towns...

for Trentino Alto Adige region:
-MOSELE surname in Pergine Valsugana, Trento, Brunico, Predazzo, Bolzano, Bosentino, Riva del Garda, Levico Terme, Fiera di Primiero towns, almost currently the surname Mosele is present in this towns...
-MOSELLI in Fiera di Primiero town

I searched in the Trentino Alto Adige births,
and I found this birth records:

first name surname gender birthdate birthplace parish
CIRILLO MOSELE M 2/2/1845 LEVICO - SS. Redentore
DOMENICO MOSELE M 3/8/1843 LEVICO - SS. Redentore
EUGENIO ROMEDIO GIOVANNI MOSELE M 8/2/1841 ROVERETO - S. Marco
FORTUNATO MOSELE M 30/10/1845 LEVICO - SS. Redentore
VALERIANO MOSELE M 26/2/1843 LEVICO - SS. Redentore

nobody Andrea.... and nobody Andrea Moselli
however it is a my suggestion the probable surname... and the first helpful thing is to find the ship's manifest...

suanj

I have found some information suggesting Asiago, which has a village named Mosele. And we have found a record with our name spelled this way. Where can I find information on this village or city?

there is a brief article in wikipedia

Hi again, Holly,

In case you haven't already seen this link to information about Asiago, read this.

http://www.bcunico.com/asiago-history.htm

Sorry, I can't get the link onto here (you'll have to Google it), but it gives you a brief, but interesting, history of Asiago, along with a photo.
