Need second opinion on handwriting info on a manifest

Postby mdvukas » 27 May 2010, 02:10

On ellisisland.org website
Passenger name : Ferdinando Di (space) Virgilio
manifest date: Oct 31, 1909 on the ship "The Baltic"

Trying to read the information part of where passenger came from
Looks like "Mother or Brother" Elia Di Virgilio

Would appreciate a second opinion.

I haven't looked at the manifest, but will just say that Elia is a masculine name, so brother seems more likely than mother. :)
Carmine

My hobby is finding things. Having found most of my own, I am happy to help others find theirs. PM me! :)

I looked at the manifest and would have to agree with Carmine. It looks like brother Elia di Virgilio in Pietransieri. Going to brother Saul (sp?) di Virgilio in Rodi, PA.

I'm confused on the masculine and feminine names. I thought that names ending in "a" were feminine. (Teresa, Maria, Giovina etc...) and masculine names ended in "i, o or e" (Giovanni, Ovidio, Carmine ect..)

I too thought that the manifest said "brother" but then I thought that the name "Elia" was a women's name.

Here are some links to learn more about Italian names... They will give you much more insight. What you stated is a good rule of thumb, but there are always exceptions...
Names like Elia, Andrea, Mattia, are all masculine names...

This one is especially good for looking at a list of male and female Italian names.

Thank you for the Websites. Helped alot now and I can refer to it in the future if needed.

The answers to my post have now given me another ancestor (Another Great Uncle) to research that I didn't know existed.

Thanks Again!!
