Martinellis of London

Postby Disey » 05 Jun 2010, 11:19

I'm new to this but would like to know if anyone knows anything about my 4x great grandfather Louis (Aloysius) Martinelli. Louis is thought to have come from the Lake Como area and was born around 1761. Louis was a barometer maker and married Abigail Marshall in London in 1799. I would love to find his Italian roots but have reached a brick wall. Any information would be appreciated

Hi Disey,
I'm in the same boat as you, with a London ancestor and no idea how he got there. 'Foreign parts' is so helpful, isn't it!
Have you looked through the UK Aliens Entry books on ancestry.co.uk? They start from 1794, and do have a few Italians listed.

I found all the parish records for the christenings of his children, their marriages etc.
You found two sets of marriage records?
Pallots index lists his C of E marriage at St Anne, Soho as Louis Martinelli, then he shows on Familysearch.org marrying as Aloysius, on August 8th at Lincolns Inn Roman Catholic church in Holborn, also known as St Anselm and St Caecilia. There is a CD Rom available from the Catholic Family History Society, but it is only transcriptions.
A Dominicus Martinelli was married to Elizabeth Wright the same year, in the same church - related?
Searching for my great x3 grandfather Raffaele CIACCIA, also known as Raphael/Ralph CHURCH. He was born in Napoli around 1792 and arrived in London before 1812 with his brother Saverio CIACCIA, where they married sisters Ann and Jane FURNEAUX. He switched between CHURCH and CIACCIA all his life, which has made it difficult enough to pin him down. I want to find his origin in Italy.

An interesting find:

Obviously a very well known family, are you one of the posters here?

Maybe researching barometer makers might be the clue here!

The Italian Influence on English Barometers from 1780
Edward Banfield

Barometer making was a major industry in Great Britain. This factual book would be of interest to those with a family history in the subject. The author traces the origins and background of the early Italian migrant barometer makers and indicates how they made their way to Britain. He describes how they set up in business to make and sell barometers, so that within a vey short period they were able to dominate the British Market.
